Pool Equipment and Balancing Water

Hi, I had been paying a pool technician previously but I wasn't able to learn anything and it was very expensive, hence going DiY route, .

For this season, i have done the following:

1) I have brushed the pool floor, skimmed the surface and removed larger debris.
2) Added Pool Shock - over 2.5 lbs already, algaecide, clarifier.
3) Ran the sand filter on backwash for couple of mins, then rinsed briefly and placed on filter. This is where I run into issues. The filter mode doesnt seem to work.
4) As I run into pressure issues , i have been manually moving the flow of water at the surface using the pool brush/net.

Issues
1) Once placed on Filter, Pressure in the sand filter drops, so does in the return jets. I keep clearing the skimmer basket sock for gunk, pine needles and smaller debris. Yet after that this happens in a short while. I have been placing the sand filter on recirculate, which bypasses the sand filter, i am not sure if I should be doing it for that long.
2) The Main Drain has not had started yet i think , cause I havent seen bubbles popping up from it as yet.
3) There are 4 return jets in my pool, 2 by the steps , 1 in the deep and 1 on the opposite side to the steps. The one on the opposite side to the steps has barely any pressure in it.
4) My deep end and shallow end return jets have air bubbles at times once the pump is on.
5) My Heater - A Raypack Gas Heater, shows "No Demand" is this also causing any potential issues?
6) I think due to the lack of circulation of water on filter mode, my water is still cloudy. I ran the AcuCheck test last night and most of the parameters were in the "Ok" range. I think the hardness might have been slightly higher.

I will upload images here with for your reference.

Sorry if this is not the right category or group thread to be posting under.

Thanks for all your help!

Pool Equipment.jpg

I am here

Good morning - we have opened our pool after being covered since Oct last year. Nothing was done for those 5-6months.

5+ yr old - 36,000 gallon - in ground concrete pool - marcite finish.

Pulling cover off days ago and found water crystal clear with complete vibrant green :) algae covering bottom of pool and walls.

Scrub - vacuum - repeat and repeat - have added 28gallons of LC per local pool supply over two days. Green is gone but water is very cloudy blue now. Can’t see bottom.

Water test this morning gave these numbers

TC 9ppm - FC 9ppm - PH 6 drops - Base demand 0 - TA 125ppm - Calcium Hardness 150ppm - Stabilizer 300 ppm - Total solids 1000ppm.

75 degree water temp.

Pool supply now calls for 4 qts of Metal Control - 1 gallon Muratic - 20lbs Hardness increased - 1.5qts of Clarifier.

Sounded more about $$ than helping me clear up quickly. 5+ tread I’ve never put that much into it …but have never let it get that bad either.

Just looking for advice.
I appreciate this site!

Thank you
John

VS pump and can’t get the schedule right…

For anyone new to the story, when Tara says she has heavy use from dogs, she ain't kiddin. The rest of us think 'oh, well MY dog loves to swim too', but we are not on the same planet, muchless the same level. :ROFLMAO:

But it was all working without too much effort previously so something new is going on.

Also for anyone new, step one is always the overnight test, even with clear water. The testing and filter will catch it long before you can see the algae bloom.

Hayward variable speed pump question

All VSP's can be controlled from their own control panel.
Some VSPs no longer come with their own control panel. See many Jandy VSPs.

Most Hayward VSPs require the control panel wires to be disconnected when the automation RS-485 wires are connected to the pump.

To enable the pump control panel you need to open up the back wiring compartment and disconnect the automation wires and reconnect the control panel wires.

This is why the pump control panel is dark.

Stubborn algae afte SLAM

After a few months of not taking care of my pool (I know I know..) I'm now paying the price. Most (99%) of the algae cleaned up after the SLAM and some brushing but some small pieces remain. It definately looks like green algae, idential the what was there before the SLAM.

Question now is, do I SLAM again or try a spot treatment? I read about a chlorine puck in a sock but not so sure.

Levels today (TF-Pro Salt kit):

FC - 5
CC - 0
pH - 7.4 (dropped it to 7.2 yesterday to tackke high TA)
TA - 70
CYA -45 (I normally keep this a little higher, 60/70, but am working my way back there slowly)
CH - 350 (Getting it to 450 at the minute is the plan)
Salt - 3600

Plaster Pool, Autopilot ColorSync Gen II SWG.

PoolMath is telling me to add 216oz liquid chlorine to SLAM (18) based on my current CYA.

Attach pergola to patio -- worried about gas lines under patio

No, it's a standard 10x12 pergola. I'm just really strong
Lol. I think he was thinking a wooden structure you built yourself versus the metal-ish ones at Coscto that you could move around alot easier before they were bolted down.

I assumed the Costco style one from the start or else you would have been cementing the posts IMO.

Hayward variable speed pump question

First, what youre talking about is an inside remote. Do you have a pool subpanel?

Pls take a pic if your entire pool pad, then provide the Model # of your pump. All VSP's can be controlled from their own control panel.

Finally, how did "the worker" break the remote? How old is your remote? If more than 2-3 yrs old, chances are that the battery died. If they actually did drop and break it, then they should pay for it or disct their services...

Pool renovation

My wife and I decided that we love our pool area so much it was time for a refresh. Pool was built early to mid 1980's Timber construction was discovered upon concrete being removed. Wood is rotting in some areas and will need replacing, I have talked to a local pool place and they are slammed busy with about 10 other pools of our vintage to repair. He stated to me that the repair isn't too bad and if a person is relatively handy it can be done on our own. Looks like I may need to replace a few 4x4's and a bunch of 2x4's. Has anyone else taken on a DIY like this? How did it go? what do I need to be aware of?

Should I put my solar cover on now? Or wait?

My dog looks forward to the first trip out each morning to confront the ducks! He hasn't got one yet, but is silent in his approach. So far, when he gets close, he stops and doesn't seem to know what to do. The ducks are pretty casual about the whole thing. The prior dog never understood that loud, shrill barking as he ran made the ducks fly away long before he got near.

Help Please - Aux Relays Not Working

Replaced the two din dip switch chips and that did not improve anything.
David,

What are these??

Let's just troubleshoot one problem.. your lights not working..

The first test I need you to do is to check the input (Line) voltage coming into your lights relays Aux 1 and Aux

1. Remove the cover over the circuit breaker area.

Edit... the relay in the upper left is normally the Pump/Filter relay, the next relay to the right is Aux1, then Aux2, etc..

2. Find Aux 1 and Aux 2
3. Measure the Line-in side of the relays and confirm that you have about 120 Volts AC on both relays. From left to right the pins are Line1, Load1, Line2, and Load2... Measure between Line1 and ground and if used Line2 and ground.. Record your readings.
4. Turn on the lights..
5. Measure between Load1 and ground and if used Load2 and ground and tell us what you get. In theory, you should have the same 120 volts AC.

Let us know how that goes.

Show us a pic of your panel so we can see all the relays and breakers.

Thanks,

Jim R.

Need advice: Liner replacement

Welcome to TFP!

Sorry for the bad fortune.

Reducing the size will effectively require a new pool. I’m not sure how they would add the walls, since they are generally placed on ledges dug for them. A pool builder can answer your questions.
Thanks. I’m pretty sure I’m stuck with the size. Does making the pipes bigger make sense?

VS pump and can’t get the schedule right…

Is my pool just a extra dirty and having DE makes it normal for me to backwash so much?
l1,

None of what you report sounds like a filter issue or pump schedule issue to me...

If you have to backwash, or clean, a DE filter often, then something is clogging it up.

The most likely cause is algae, even if you can't see it yet...

If I were in your shoes, I would perform an Overnight Chlorine Loss Test or OCLT.. Overnight Chlorine Loss Test

Just for reference... Until recently I had two rent house pools with DE filter.. I never backwashed and just opened and cleaned the filter every 6 month... The point being, that your problem is not the filter or your pump schedule.

Show us your test data..

Thanks,

Jim R.
