Need advice: Liner replacement

This sucks. Our liner apparently had some big tears and everything leaked out. Out summer is probably a wash (no pun intended) and I’m on the hook for some big bills I was hoping to avoid for a few more years. But there’s also some opportunity.

The pool is huge: 25 ft wide, and 45 feet long. The width makes it difficult/expensive to get a pool cover, and the sheer size (40,000 gallons+) makes it very expensive to heat. Replacing the liner is the time for us to get an automatic pool cover that will be quite expensive up front, but should probably save us $ in the long term.

What other things should we be looking at replacing, upgrading? The pipes are 1-1/2” and 25+ years old. Should we be looking at replacing those? Upgrading to 2” pipe? Skimmers? The pool patio?

I don’t know if it’s possible to make the pool smaller, but making it a 20x40 would definitely make it more manageable.

Also, who would you talk to? A pool repair person, or a builder?

At the end of this I’d like to have a pool that’s cheaper to maintain and/or more enjoyable.

Welcome to TFP!

Sorry for the bad fortune.

Reducing the size will effectively require a new pool. I’m not sure how they would add the walls, since they are generally placed on ledges dug for them. A pool builder can answer your questions.
