Slam salt level

The vast majority of the time, the "cloud" is:
a. dirt
b. pollen
c. dead algae
They can all look/behave similarly.

c. can be dark brown, medium brown or brownish yellow. No way to tell from the look what kind of dead it is.
If it has a greenish tinge, unknown if there is still living among the dead - but it is pretty highly suspect.
Live algae tends to be a bit sticky, so you have to lean into the brush a bit to get it off. And tends to make greenish clouds.
Yellow algae is a thing, but less likely than most think. It's hallmark is being very resistant to chlorine.
Do a full SLAM, making 1000% sure you pass all the criteria, including cleaning all nooks and crannies. If you then lower CL to the recommended range (but never to minimum) and it comes back quickly (a few number of days), then you might have mustard. Or do the regular SLAM again. And if it then comes back quickly again.....

Calcium Hypochlorite will just raise calcium. Sodium Hypochlorite (I.e. Liquid or Bleach) will raise salt.
Pool Math said both, in "Effects of Adding". @Newdude beat me to it while I was typing the other!

Returns Not Working

Hello all,

Right now I have only 1 of 4 returns working and my pool is a gross shade of green. I have 2 questions.

First, is it OK to run the pump with only one working return so I can begin the process to get clear water OR is it important to have multiple returns working to improve circulation?

Second, what can I do to diagnose and hopefully fix the problem with the broken returns?

The return that is working is on the side closest to the pump. The 3 that are not working are on the opposite side of the pool. I have read some of the other threads in the forum related to returns not working. I tried plugging the working return and turning on the pump to try to blow out anything that may have been obstructing the other return lines but that didn't work. When I change the multiport valve to port 2 the working return does nothing, the returns that aren't working do nothing, and the filter pressure goes up significantly (from 10-20 psi).

Thank you in advance for any advice on what steps I should take next.

Jeff

First Opening Salt Question

So, I showed up to the store to buy 15 gallons of chlorine and I've never seen such confusion. Like, 4 people completely bewildered as to what I was trying to do haha. I wager that's because they're accustomed to just shocking weekly or whatever. But for my own sanity, can someone explain why exactly I'm doing this process right now? What exactly is the data in my tests that's saying, "go for the nuke option first" rather than just bringing up some chemicals to the appropriate levels?

I'm just trying to completely understand it. It looks like a pretty involved process and I don't have a lot of free time right now. I'm half way to paying someone to just set the pool up right for me so I can be on my way and maintain it the rest of the year. But I'm sure I'm missing something here

One Week Old Pool. Filter PSI Low

B,

What a load of Bull Feathers!!!

You need to find some better reading material...

My filter pressure is about 1 lb. and my system works perfectly...

Filter pressure is really how hard it is to push water through your filter.. As long as you have a good flow of water back to your pool, then everything is most likely just fine.

Missing a weir door is a much bigger problem!!! have your pool builder come back and install it.. A weir door is what makes a skimmer..... SKIM.. :)

Thanks,

Jim R.
lol thanks Jim! This is very reassuring. And we do have a weir door. Apparently after a long Darn, my observation and assessment skills go down the toilet 😂

Calling Grey Plaster Owners - aka Medium Grey, French Grey, Tahoe Blue

Getting replastered and am told the Tahoe Blue color is also known by the names in the title. My question is about tile decorations set into the plaster.

I've looked at pools with the grey plaster, and they look darker, which I like. When we went to a tile store to look at tiles, we saw some tile turtles. My wife thought they would look cool, and I said we might not see them if we put them on the bottom or the walls, because I was thinking how dark the water will be. But, I have since realized that the water itself will still be clear, but the grey plaster gives the illusion of the water being dark, so the turtles should still easily be seen even on the bottom of our 8' deep end or on the walls, is that correct?

Anybody have pics of decorations in the plaster of their grey pools?

Thanks in advance.

One Week Old Pool. Filter PSI Low

Low PSI is a good thing and common with variable speed pumps. If water is flowing well from the returns (a.k.a : jets), things are great.

You probably won't see much water movement at the skimmers. Check inside that the weir door is bobbing away and you are skimming fine.
Just kidding, we definitely have one lol it’s just laid flat/pulled inwards towards the basket.

I read online that this gauge should be at 10 for the filter to work properly,

We don’t have a weir door, should we have one? And thank you for the info!

Let’s see your water after removing winter cover!! **RESURRECTED FOR 2025!**

Bought a new house in November with an existing pool so I'm opening someone else's close. I sold my old house to my brother who informed me his pool (my old pool) was crystal clear at open. 😞 Missing my old pool a little extra today.

Looks like you lost some water over the winter 😳

Warrior Se/Dolphin 200 - starts than stops issue

More than likely time for a new bot. That type of behavior signals a drive/impeller motor overcurrent issues which often shows up as water intrusion into the motor box. They are ridiculously expensive to replace and not serviceable in any reliable way. It’s usually half the cost of a new robot and you’ll wind up only getting a short amount of time out of it. You can continue to diagnose it - do an out of water self test, open up the motors box, etc. But I’m willing to bet it’s dying and not worth fixing.

Sorry, but 3-5 years seems to be the best these bot manufacturers can do.

One Week Old Pool. Filter PSI Low

Hi everyone!
Our pool is finally done (yay) but I think we’re having a problem with our pump/filter. We have a 2hp Pentair Superflo VST and a Pentair Clean and Clear Plus cartridge filter. The builder set a schedule for our pump to run at 2200 RPMs 24/7 during the first 30 days while we brush our PebbleSheen and get everything balanced. The concern I have is the pressure gauge on the top of our filter reads just over 0 psi and has since the builder “set everything up” one week ago. He saw it at zero and acted as though that was normal, but I had a bad feeling because his guy was here for over 2 hours and called him for help after attempting to turn everything on and set it up. I read online that this gauge should be at 10 for the filter to work properly, so I became more concerned. When you put your hand in the skimmer there’s barely any suction. My husband put the pump on high (like 3400 RPMs) and the pressure gauge went up to 10 and we could feel suction in the skimmer. We cleaned out the pump basket thinking it could be blocked but it hasn’t made a difference. So I guess what I am trying to figure out is, is the pressure supposed to be at 10? If so, how big of a problem is this 😢Thanks for any advice!

Warrior Se/Dolphin 200 - starts than stops issue

I have a 5 year old Pentair Warrior SE bot that's been very reliable, works well - just a bit of normal wear and tear. I've checked the impeller, gears, treads, etc. When I start the bot, the blue light lights up, impeller runs, tread runs - for 10 seconds or so and then it stops. I've held it still, let it loose, powered off, etc. Is it possible it's a power cord issue? The power cord looks fine visually when I check the connection inside the bot, everything is locked down. I haven't removed the power cord to see if there is anything visual there. Twist connector looks fine.

Any thoughts - or is it time for a new bot? If a new bot is in my future, any recommendations for something new?

Doug

First Opening Salt Question

If you mean you have tons of liquid stabilizer??
Generally, it is problematic, and is more expensive. That's why we recommend dry (Trouble Free and all)
If you have it, use it. Make sure you rinse the bottle multiple times and ensure you got all the product out of the bottle.
Gotcha. I'll note that for the future. But based on pool math, I'll need 6lbs of dry stuff for this. So I'm going to just work through the bottles of liquid I have here already for this.
