Sand filter making weird noise is this normal.

Show us pictures of your pump and the motor data plate.

All p[pumps can do salt water. All pools are saltwater pools.

If you can stand the sound, a pump can howl from bad bearings for a year or more.

I had a booster pump with bad bearings and a neighbor said she could not walk her dog nearby so I finally replaced it.
Haha! I have a booster pump that the previous owner used for a Polaris vacuum. I use a Dolphin DX4, so I’ve never turned the booster pump on.

I'm attaching a picture of the pump's plate. The date code "1801310818" translates to January 13, 2018, I believe.

My breaker is a 115 single pole, first switch is for the pump, and the second one is for the booster pump, which I do not use anymore.. I was looking at the Pentair Superflo, which costs $1,530. Given the labor charges in New Jersey, I estimate that a professional will charge me about $2,500 for the pump and installation.

I had a ball valve that cracked and I had to replace it yesterday, so I'm feeling a bit more confident with PVC plumbing. However, Pentair doesn’t offer a good warranty for DIY installations, so I'm considering a variable speed pump from Black and Decker ($900) instead. Catch is I will need to upgrade the electrical to 240, which I think is better for future proofing(debatable).

I am considering a DIY installation, even if I need to hire someone to upgrade the electrical system. My plumbing is 1.5 inches wide.

Struggling to Clean Fine Dirt/Sand from Pool Floor – Better Options?

I have this issue in a southern KC metro area suburb as it is dusty here in KS. My pool guys (who do the open/close for me) said the only way to totally remove it is to vac to waste. I hate to waste water so I started adding fiber-fill (stuffed animal guts) to my Pentair Kreepy Krauly's filter box and it does a really good job of catching a lot more of the dirt particles without inhibiting the suction. It's just a way of life here in KS and unless I waste water Vac'ing, this will be ongoing and I accept that and have developed my workaround.

Fresh Pool Install

Hello all, I just had a 30' Round pool with vinyl lining relaced after 17 years of service. It's about 21,000 gallons and I am trying to figure the chemicals because my pool guy retired. I have an inline chlorinator installed but haven't used any tablets yet. I have added 3 gallons of chlorine and dissolved 1 pound of conditioner/stabilizer in a sock in the skimmer. The PH tests at 7.6. The alkalinity is 140 ppm. I am wondering where to go from here since this will be the first year I am doing it on my own. Do I add another pound of conditioner to the skimmer? I assume it will probably take around 5ish? Will that bring down the alkalinity or do I need to add mauritic acid? I would appreciate any help I can get! Thank you!

Owner Build in Virginia Beach

I like your concept. Can you identify which direction is north? And what type of water does the view open up to? Is this a full time residence? Rental property? How are away are neighbors on each side?

A few comments before receiving the above:
  • I'd like to see one side or the other, preferably left, that has more depth to allow for chaise lounges. Many will want to lay down by the pool. It could just be a section on the left side that protrudes out like 3-4 more feet and say 10' wide, for three chaise and small tables in between.
  • The length of the pool is at the very short end for a diving board. The pics show the depth rise starting fairly quickly away from the deep end wall. That slope is the danger zone. I'm sure they built in the appropriate diving envelope, but I'm also quite sure they are going with minimums on depth due to the constrained length (for a diving pool). I do enjoy having a diving board, but ours is also deeper and longer which gives me a lot more mental comfort.
  • Enclosing the sides of the tv area with a full solid wall will be very beneficial for keeping weather off of the tv, and also for reducing backlighting while viewing the tv. As well as reducing wind, depending again on the direction and prevailing winds, which I presume are SW in the summer.
  • What is your consideration/allowance for storing all of the floating pool accessories? We really love our Bote Hangout Suite products. But they are large and you don't want them outside exposed to the sun 24/7. Some of this "knowing" comes from having owned a pool. Is this your first pool, or are you experienced is that area?
  • Lighting and sound are important of course. Depending on your budget, Coastal Source | High-Performance Outdoor Audio & Lighting products are excellent. Sometimes it's good to look at high end products so you are consciously aware of what sacrifices you are making if going with other products. There are all sorts of reasons to get any level of product, but the awareness is key.
  • Outdoor shower?
  • Deck surface material?
Our next pool project, a few years out on the sound in NC, will be the roughly the same dimensions 20 x 30, plus a ledge of some size, and I'm not going with a diving board because I feel it's too small for "my" mental safety comfort, but also because of how much of the pool is of "unstandable" depth due to the required envelope.

On my 7th Pentair Intellichlor in less than a year

Chris,

We recommend that a cell be rated at 2 x the volume of the pool.. So an IC20 is way too small for your pool.. The IC40 should be perfect.

What specific chemicals do you use??

We do not recommend Clorox salt.. :(

For reference... I use a little muriatic acid to control my pH and salt, that is it.. I suspect that you are using other 'magic' pool store potions..

I do not add anything else to my pool all summer..

Do you routinely add pool store 'Shock' to your pool every week or so? You should not have to do this..

Please list, or show us pics, of all the chemicals that you add to your pool..

Sorry for all the questions, but I'm just trying to see what you do differently then most of our members..

Thanks,

Jim R.

New to TFP

My wife and I are new to this forum. We put a 20x40 inground pool - vinyl liner in last year (30k gallons). We had no issues last year but after opening it a week ago, we cannot get the water clear. Has a milky haze. Local pool store has been somewhat helpful but think we need a second opinion. Here is where our test results are. We did shock it early about 4 hours ago because chlorine was .5.

FC - 5.5
pH - 7
CYA - 28
TA - 115
Calcium - 250
Sat Index - -.4

Any suggestions?

Draining Fiberglass Pool to Fix Main Drain Leak

Any more specifics on where the leak is? Is it not something you could fix with underwater epoxy and a dye kit to make sure it is sealed?

Most FG pool plumbing I have worked on has a compression fitting that has to be tightened from the back of the pool shell. I don't think repairing the main drain is going to be as simple as draining the pool and swapping in a new drain.
