This is my second season with this pool, and this year I opened it myself. However, I’ve noticed that my Hayward sand filter is making a strange noise, and I'm not sure if it did that last year as well. Can someone analyze this sound and let me know if it’s normal? The water level is up to halfway on the skimmer, and I don’t see any bubbles in the pump window. The gasket appears to be flush, and the returns are working as expected.

There is a slow drip coming from the return line. When I tightened it, the drip shifted to the valve port side, as shown in the second picture. I believe it’s the same drip and that water is traveling over there. I will fix the leak in the return line, but that shouldn't cause any issues since it's just the return.

What is the filter PSI?

Is there an air relief valve on the filter and have you purged air until water flows?

If your return flow is normal I would not worry about the sounds.

The pressure gauge is at zero looks like it went kaput. Needle doesn't moves even when I blow into it. Going to get a new one from HD. I don't think I this model has release valve. Now I think the noise is from pump. It is super series Hayward single speed 1.5 hp

Yup, replace the PSI gauge. Get a glycerin-filled gauge that goes 0-30 PSDI. You don't need a gauge that goes to 60 PSI.

Yeah, your pump sounded like it had noisy bearings.

Can you recommend me a pump my wiring is 115 but I will upgrade it if required. I will get a vsp will do salt water in future. How bad it sounds does it needs immediate replacement

Show us pictures of your pump and the motor data plate.

All p[pumps can do salt water. All pools are saltwater pools.

If you can stand the sound, a pump can howl from bad bearings for a year or more.

I had a booster pump with bad bearings and a neighbor said she could not walk her dog nearby so I finally replaced it.

Haha! I have a booster pump that the previous owner used for a Polaris vacuum. I use a Dolphin DX4, so I’ve never turned the booster pump on.

I'm attaching a picture of the pump's plate. The date code "1801310818" translates to January 13, 2018, I believe.

My breaker is a 115 single pole, first switch is for the pump, and the second one is for the booster pump, which I do not use anymore.. I was looking at the Pentair Superflo, which costs $1,530. Given the labor charges in New Jersey, I estimate that a professional will charge me about $2,500 for the pump and installation.

I had a ball valve that cracked and I had to replace it yesterday, so I'm feeling a bit more confident with PVC plumbing. However, Pentair doesn’t offer a good warranty for DIY installations, so I'm considering a variable speed pump from Black and Decker ($900) instead. Catch is I will need to upgrade the electrical to 240, which I think is better for future proofing(debatable).

I am considering a DIY installation, even if I need to hire someone to upgrade the electrical system. My plumbing is 1.5 inches wide.

For safety, your pumps need to be on GFCI CBs. Your existing 120V CB should be replaced with a GFCI CB.

You can go through two DIY installs and still save money over paying for a professional installation with a warranty. I would not let the warranty drive the pump selection.

B&D/Circupool/Calimar VS pumps are good if you do not have automation and can install 240V GFCI CB, 12 gauge wiring, and switches.

Replace all the flex hose in your equipment pad.

There is no rush if you can stand the sound of your pump.
