You know what they say....if air can get in, water can get out! Maybe that is not the case when it is running, but the pump doesn't run all the time. So to answer your question, I take air leaks very seriously.

I was literally going to say replace the whole unit. I am not one for fixing leaks in plastic below the water line. Judt not worth the risk. I say you guys made a great choice.

Why not just ditch the PVC from the filter to the pump all together. Get yourself a high quality 3-4' filter hose and some clamps, problem solved.
