Skimmer leak

It seems I have lost a little bit of water over the winter. I had the water about a quarter of the way up the skimmer opening and now it is near the bottom. I used the red ph Taylor 0004 testing liquid to look for a leak around the skimmer it looks like I found a small one near one of the screw holes. The screw is actually stripped so I cannot tighten it. I was thinking my options are this: 801 clear silicon over the screw openings and maybe around the outside of the skimmer for good measure then put the faceplate back on. Another option would be some flex seal tape around the skimmer over the screws then put the faceplate back on? Thought? Other options? 5 year old fiberglass pool.

Can I trust my pump?

The original toy was made out of sheet metal for the base with sharp rusty edges and the robots were cast from a plastic material high in formaldehyde residues … and there was no Prop 65 warning back in the good old days. If you sliced a finger on the side of the game then you just went to the hospital and took your tetanus shot like a man!! It was a right of passage. And the formaldehyde only causes cancer if you live too long anyways.

Bunch of sissies nowadays …

Hey bellehill and Welcome !!!!!

several hundred dollars later I went to a local pool store
The small store exists to sell you chemicals just like the big store. Even if Mom and Pop have the best intentions, they still follow industry advice which is designed to fleece you. We'll walk you through it on the cheap and easy. click the blue links:

Ooooh. We need pic of the kayak also. Those bad boys are rare like unicorns.

Can I trust my pump?

I just ask Google Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, ChatGPT and Claude what the answer is and they tell me everything.

If they disagree, I just say “Well, that’s not what the other chatbots say” and then I let them fight it out.

Right now, Chat GPT and Claude are arguing about the correct answer to this thread and I will post their answer if they can agree.

I’m sure @JamesW can whip up a nice Mathematica plot for that.

Mastertemp400 breaker tripping while heater is OFF

Just saw the two posts above, after I sent this post in.
Breaker test button trips the breaker as expected.
I do not know the difference between a short circuit trip and a GFCI trip, or how to diagnose which it may be, or how to fix it. I'll do some researching to learn about it, and maybe you guys can chime in. Thanks.

What did you do to your pool today?

Tested and added a little FC, MA, and CYA. SWCG is producing off and on through the weeks now, as long as the daytime temps are getting up in the 60's and low 70's.

Also checked the Accuweather 45 day forecast and decided to go ahead and open up all the water features. Shows only a couple of times that we may drop low enough to kick on freeze protection, but not low enough to actually freeze. So shouldn't have any issues with the deck jets freezing the deck over.

Can I trust my pump?

If you want to know your system head loss and flow rate, you can try to measure the pressure differential across the pump by putting a vacuum gauge on the strainer pot drain port and a pressure gauge on the pump discharge drain port. You can also use the pressure at the filter gauge too if you trust it. The pressure difference is related to flow and total head … I’m sure @JamesW can whip up a nice Mathematica plot for that.

Heater Leak (Pentair MT 175)

It is a Pentair MasterTemp 175, leaking from the mainifold bolts...took the whole thing apart, didn't see any significant water in the combustion chamber. I have heard that water leaking from the manifold bolts is an indication that the heater coil has ruptured, but I am not seeing anything that indicates that inside the combustion chamber. I did see something that looked like a crack on the inside of the manifold (couldn't get a good picture), just wondering if the $180 for a new manifold is the right patch to go down.

Thanks for any advice...I guess the good thing is that I am pretty comfortable breaking down the heater...

New to TFP

We installed a 7,500 gallon above ground (although slightly sunken) Kayak pool in September 2019….yes, right before the pandemic. The first 1-2 years were pretty good, the last 1-2 years I continually have problems with CYA. Several trips to Leslie’s and several hundred dollars later I went to a local pool store who told me to add baking soda. My eyes were opened and no more trips to Leslie’s for us! Hoping TFP will be easy and successful this year!
