Drains between Covered patio and pool

Decking pavers were recently installed but PB only installed two sets of deck drains that you can see in the photo under those windows, no drains between the pool and the patio (which slopes toward the pool). PB says that the 4-5ft section of the deck between the uncovered part of the patio and pool will not wash enough dirt and debris into the pool to be a concern vs. the negative aesthetics of them installing drains along that section.

Some neighbors have the same pool builder and in all cases the builder installed drains with metal covers or pavers with slots cut into them between the patio and pool.

PB says what they’ve done for my particular pool is actually a design enhancement to improve the aesthetic and I should just plan to direct water toward those under window drains when washing the deck.

Want to check if the PBs rationale makes sense to the community here or will I likely have issues with the chemical balance/dirt/debris in the pool? Thanks

No way I would want drains right next to the house foundation when they leak. Were there drawings in the contract showing those?

Old diving board: keep or replace?

Hi, we’re currently redoing our 9’ in-ground pool and patio and there’s an old base for a diving board (see pic).

We ideally want to keep it (we’re grandfathered in from a code perspective) but am not sure if we just need a new springboard or a new base as well. The patio guys are asking what to do—go around it or chip it out—and we’re not sure what to tell them.

Does anyone have experience replacing just the board? How would we even go about finding one that fits? Seems like most modern bases don’t resemble ours at all (home was built 1968), so maybe we need a new everything?

Thanks, LL
SRSmith seems to have replacement boards. Not sure if it’s worth trying to save the base or not. Depends on what kinda shape it’s in.

Matching waterline tile and pool plaster

Thanks for the quick response, @kimkats ! Good point about the seams. We have a curved, irregularly shaped pool so can hide that last matching piece in a corner somewhere if it doesn’t match up.

Re: plaster, yes, our pool guy warned us about streaks if we went dark. It sounds like that’s your primary concern rather than “matching” the tile, yes? Certainly lightening the plaster would help with the matching too since it wouldn’t be so teal v. blue...

Auto-fill plumbing

TBH, you only have a pressure vaccuum breaker on your autofill valve, in our area ,to protect the house (and potentially the city supply) it has to be a full blown RPZ backflow preventer so i would caution against cutting it out and just putting an anti-siphon
As for the rust, the potable water supply should have had a lead free cast brass TEE installed instead of cast iron

Go with Pentair SWG or Circupool RJ Series?

He also mentioned that I might need to install a timer? I was under the impression my pool pump already has a built in timer...Will a separate timer be necessary?
Read this section of the SWG WIKI...the reasoning for the timer/SWG control is there, as are several solutions.
Also, what reasons are there to go with circupool vs pentair?
What @Newdude said...if you have Pentair automation, then get the Pentair. If you don't have automation, but are going to consider it in the short term future, you might also consider the Pentair. If you have no automation, then the Circupool is an excellent choice. If, on the off chance, you have some other brand of automation, I would consider getting the brand of cell that matches your automation system.

Matching waterline tile and pool plaster

Who me??? OH YEAH! Thanks for letting us help you make your pool look wonderful!

That tile is SO neat! I love it!! Make they tell you how they are going to do the corners as well as if the walls are not just the right length to be able to have all full sized tiles.

Plaster color-While I LOVE a dark plaster I do want to let you know that some (many) installers have a hard time getting it right. Darker plaster can show the hand troweling and imperfections more than a light colored plaster. Now if you know the installers are "Top Shelf" and take great pride in their work then go for that oh so pretty plaster. It will go with the tile very well. I like a contrast instead of a blending to make each one pop.

Go with Pentair SWG or Circupool RJ Series?

Do you have automation ? With Pentair automation you'll want it to be able to link up so stick with Pentair. With no automation it's a toss up if the deal with Pentair is cheaper.

We recommed 2X units which would be the IC40 (40k gallons) or RJ45+. I personally would have gone 3X in NY for ROI alone and I would strongly consider 4X in a hot climate. Ask the PB the difference in cost of the IC40 and IC60. The IC60 will live 50% longer but probably not cost 50% more. It varies seemingly by the day sometimes, and the seller, but it's often only 20% more to go big.

For circupool i like the RJ45+ or RJ60+ for the finer adjustments it has over other Circupool models. It makes it easier to dial it in, but i don't have those fine adjustments with Pentair so it's really not a deal breaker.

Puzzling water flow when pump is off

When the main pump is off, I hear gurgling sounds that suggest water is flowing out of the filter, back through the skimmer basket, and out to the pool, but I can't detect where in the pool any water is entering.

The gurgling you hear is most likely just air rising in the filter. This is normal as air can get trapped by high flow rates near the bottom of the filter.

Moreover, air is entering the water lines during this process. After sitting overnight, the skimmer basket has water up to the level of the input from the pool; i.e., it drains until it can't drain any more, with air filling the remainder of the basket.
This indicates and air leak somewhere in the system

The gurgling sounds have stopped; no more water is running out of the filter. When the pump comes back on, it needs to re-prime itself, and every couple days or so, I have to bleed air out of the filter.
This is to be expected with an air leak.
If I open the bleed valve on the top of the filter while the pump is off, air is sucked into the top of the filter as the water drains from it.
This is normal since the valve location is most likely above water level so water drains back to water level.
I'm trying to figure out where the air is entering the system and where the water from the filter is going when the pump is off, so I can "fix" it. Try as I might, I'm not getting it figured out, so I thought I'd stop by here to see if any of the experts can "solve" the puzzle for me.
This is the hard part. Most common locations are pump lid gaskets, drain plug gaskets and suction side o-rings. The first two are easy to detect. Inspect the gaskets and use some pool lube and see if that doesn't help.

Puzzling water flow when pump is off

If I close the valve at 12, presumably I cut off all flow back to the pool from the pump, but when I do, flow continues out of the filter!
You should only be able to close off left and right, or any 25/75, 40/60 etc combo in between. Try it again envisioning that the handle is the base of a T. It should turn this way.

Screenshot_20250311_195905_Chrome.jpg

Another trick is to shut the pump off and pour water on the various suction valves while it's gurgling. If you hit the right spot, it'll stop momentarily.

A leak after the pump would cause a geyser.

Pentair Intelliflo Controller Receptacle Replacement

What model number IntelliFlo pump are we discussing?

Only the yellow and green wires are used for RS-485.

Did one of the active pins break?

Do you have a replacement 2-pin receptacle?

Show us pictures of the pump and receptacle.
Hi ajw22,

The pump is the Intelliflo Variable Speed pump. It was installed in 2015. One of the four pins broke on the receptacle. I can buy the two-pin replacement, but I want to make sure I will have full functionality before I do so., Here are some pictures. Thanks!

Matching waterline tile and pool plaster

Hi all, we’re redoing our pool and have selected these teal half moon tiles below, and are now choosing a pool plaster color.

I love DB Midnight Blue because we live in a wooded area and I wanted more a dark lake vibe, as an aqua pool seemed too tropical. The problem is I’m worried the green undertones of the teal won’t sit well next to the midnight blue. For those with more experience, does that matter? Should we switch to a lighter plaster? The original owners had a basic ivory but I really do love that dark blue lagoon color.

Any thoughts welcome on if we’re overthinking it. Thanks in advance! This forum is a godsend.
