Drained Due to CH Pushing 1000ppm..

MasterTemp 400 in your signature has a copper heat exchanger, not titanium.

Turquoise stains can be cooper or other metals.
I was wrong there but I still don't think the bluing is from copper but could be wrong. It is mainly at locations where there is aeration but does occur in a few other spots. Not sure if they're visible in my picture but I can post more.

Help me please, I'm confused.

Hi everyone, love TFP and it's helped me have a gorgeous pool for five years now with minimal hard work.

Here is my story -- I had to close my pool dirty last fall. Lost power to pool pump and SWG and pool got leaves and was a mess and no one could come fix the power and it was freezing each night and I was worried about the pipes. So I drained it down to empty the pipes and covered it until now. Maybe that wasn't best but here we are.

Just got new power to pump and SWG and took the cover off. Full of leave and water is green. I refilled pool from the well over the last three days and had the robot vacuum running multiple times a day. I started the pump last night and after three hours tested the water.
pH LOW (very yellow) FC 0 CYA 40 TA 50 Salt 2200 water temp is 60 and SWG is off.
I planned to start a SLAM tonight because I am home now tonight and all day tomorrow. Last night I went ahead and added a whole box of Borax Mule and three bags of salt I had at home. I also added two gallons of liquid chlorine because I couldn't help myself.
Pool has been circulating for the past 24 hours and I've ran vacuum twice more and kept skimmer clean and backwashed once this morning.

Now I'm ready to start the official SLAM so I tested again. 99% leaves are out, water is fairly clear but pool is green.
pH up to 7.0 and FC 10

Can you explain why only two gallons of bleach last night brought FC from 0 to 10 and none seemed to get consumed in the past 24 hours?
Any body have any other suggestions as I start to SLAM?

Skimmer basket broke what to do until new one arrives.

If you have two skimmers, turn this one off.
If you have one skimmer, turn the pump off until the morning.
Thanks for the quick reply. I have turned the pump off and put it in service mode so it doesn’t come back on in the morning while I am working.
74,

Kind of windy today in the DFW area... A lot of stuff blowing in the pool..

Jim R.
a whole lot of stuff and me and most my neighbors have Bradford Pear trees in our front yard so tons of little white flower petals are making their way to my pool. I have been emptying the skimmer baskets every other day and the pump basket about every 3 day.

Seeking Fresh Start to Pool Maintenance with FULL Pool Remodel Beginning in Two (2) Days

I found TFP last summer as numerous issues, small and large, led to the scheduling of a complete in-ground pool remodel (remove & replace 1) deck, 2) plaster, 3) plumbing, 4) a portion of our concrete pad, and 5) the natural gas heater). While I've moved ever closer to the structured approach of pool maintenance here on TFP in the 19 years I've owned a pool, this remodel motivated me to fully transition, simplifying chemicals to liquid chlorine, cyanuric acid, muriatic acid, soda ash, baking soda, and calcium chloride.

I've read the majority of the TFP articles on the Pool School page now, some multiple times, as I prepare to care for our new plaster yet have some questions on balancing the water when that time comes that I was hoping to gain member insights on:
Note: My TF-Pro kit has been shipped and is on its way. I plan to use it to stay apprised with what the remodeler tells me is needed re: balancing the newly filled pool. I updated my signature though when previewing this thread I don't see it shown. Here's how it should read: 15K Gal, white quartz plaster (COMING SOON), 20' x 30' kidney shaped pool, two return jets (COMING SOON), 2.2 HP VS Pentair pump, CCP520 cartridge filter, TF-Pro test kit (being shipped now), Raypak 266K BTU NG heater (82% efficiency), **TBD** robot cleaner.
  • Q1: Any insights into what to balance first given the interdependencies of the big 5? From what I've read, I would assert CYA, CL, TA, pH, then CH must be balanced in order; however, I've found a few different combinations online and am hoping TFP has reached a general priority order I just haven't run into yet or can explain why (and how) "it depends."
  • Q2: Any recommendations from NM members here in Albuquerque for where you buy your chemicals? In my quick search I've found Leslie's as having the best deal on liquid chlorine, muriatic acid, and CYA while Lowe's is best for soda ash and calcium chloride and CostCo is best for baking soda.
  • Q3: I've been in contact with Margaret at Marina Pool and Spa about a pool robot and am leaning towards ordering an EVO 614iq Plus in a couple weeks and was wondering if anyone could link me to a thread on this particular cleaner or provide their own experience for consideration?
  • Q4: We will soon have two water returns I hope to use to point up towards the surface when needing to increase pH without affecting TA. Having used a pump placed on a stair to shoot water up above the surface of, then back into, the pool in years past generating that reassuring 'fizz' I'm uncertain if pointing one or both jets up towards the surface will be as effective. Perhaps I'm just looking for assurance from members who have had success here and potentially any words of wisdom to share?

New plunge pool - filter recommendations?

To put a bench in the pool after shotcrete you need to form the bench with rebar that is epoxied into holes drilled into the existing shell. Then have shotcrete form the bench over the rebar. That will create one structure for plaster and no cracks should occur around the bench.

The pump looks fine. How will you control the 2 speeds of the pump?

Does your plunge pool have any spa jets in it?

Skimmer basket broke what to do until new one arrives.

74,

Well too late now, but I have two sets of skimmer baskets...

I use hair nets in my skimmers, and having two sets means I can just take the dirty ones out and stick the clean ones in. Then I can take my time about cleaning the dirty ones, and install fresh hair nets..

If you have a working main drain, you could just turn off the skimmers Or just turn off the pump until your new one arrives.. One day will not make any difference.

Thanks,

Jim R.
I will probably order at least one more after the new one arrives just to have a replacement. Thanks for the quick reply. I have turned the pump off and put it in service mode so it doesn’t come back on in the morning while I am working.

Back Flow Preventer Supply line pin hole leak

The backflow should be covered over the winter to avoid freezing. There are seals and diaphragms in it that can crack from freezing and cause leaks. Most hardware stores sell various sizes of insulating sprinkler valve covers that should do the trick. All pipes and fitting should be sealed up with foam insulation and 20mil thick PVC plumbing tape.

You can foam insulate everything up to the wall, most hardware stores have all kinds of premade foam covers for all sorts of fittings. The spigot can be covered as well.

There will be enough ambient heat from the brick wall and the house to keep the plumbing safe inside that wall unless it’s in a part of your home that isn’t conditioned (like a garage). It’s just the external pipes that need insulation. Heck, you can even just throw a heavy blanket over it all.

There are also pipe heating tapes with thermostats that you can plug into a nearby outlet. The heat tape wraps around the pipe. When the thermostat senses that the pipe is getting close to freezing, it turns on and gently heats the tape using about as much power as a household heating pad. You’re not in a particularly cold part of the country so just insulating the pipes and covering stuff up over winter should suffice in most cases. For a severe cold snap that lasts longer than a day, you can just using a contractor lamp with an incandescent light bulb to throw some heat at it.
Thank you so much for the information. I have the covers and always drain the BFP and cover it in the winter. I inlet valve burst a year ago and I was postpoing replacing it until this happened.

I will insulate all the wet pipes and fittings and keep draining the BFP and covering it and hope for the best. will consider buying the heat trace if not too expensive.

Is this a good price ..

I do with a 3 HP, but we need the breakdown. Exactly which pump, and how much for the plumbing upgrade ?

(All clearly written in the contract)

P.S. Hayward uses 2.7 HPs and its fine.
I'm looking at the Hayward VS900 and it says 1.85HP. Not 2.7 or 3.

Skimmer basket broke what to do until new one arrives.

I came out after work to check my skimmer baskets and empty them. We have been have some good winds recently and lots of leaves and flowers getting in the pool from every where. One of my baskets is broke and a good chunk of it. This is allowing all the flowers to go straight to the pump basket. Is there anything I can do till what I hope is the correct replacement basket arrives tomorrow morning?

Is this a good price ..

........ speaking of details.

Any and all changes need to be spelled out to the letter in the contract, and/or added and initialed afterwards.

They broke a couple of my bricks installing my safety cover on the first pool and said they'd come back in the spring to fix it. We had a great relationship and they had done me right through the build. I trusted them 100%. But the manager left over the winter and I had no relationship with the new one, or proof that the repairs would be done for free. I went to the owner, they did ultimately do right by me, but it taught me that lesson.

Looking for Pool Equipment Installation Help on Long Island

It can take 4 hours to cross both counties as you know. :ROFLMAO:

What town are you in ?

The patio contractors are telling me it's not necessary to replace the PVC pipes under/around the pool area since they're not exposed to direct sunlight, claiming they'll last over 100 years. Is this accurate advice?
I wouldn't blink at expecting 50 years trouble free. If i was replacing the patio expecting 25 years from it on years 40+, I'd consider replacing the plumbing.
Any other advice for someone upgrading several pool equipment components at once?
Stick with one brand if automation is ever going to be in the works. They'll need to 'talk to each other' like your TV / DVD player.

Compare equal levels of equipment if you get bids from different brands. They all have a budget, medium and high end. You cannot compare a Corvette to a Ford Focus on price alone.
