    CYA Removal

I opened my pool today and CYA is at 20 vs 50 when I closed it for the fall. We had some heavy rain this winter so since I drained a few times I thought it would be lower, but not by this much. I also thought that CYA could ONLY be reduced by draining, but now I read the following on TFP...

    SpeedStir alternative?

I have the speedstir and love it...except, it is not very water resistant. I have had to clean out the corroded contacts or even twice resolder the connections to keep it going. Any good alternatives out there?

    # of Floaters

going away for a week so going to use pucks and floaters. I have used them in the past and they do not seem to keep up very well with the FC demand so I use two of them, even then it is kind of marginal. So I wondered if there is a formula or suggestions for how many floaters are needed for my...

PH going up faster than normal

Thanks mknauss, that's about what I am adding now. It has been 2.5 years since I have had any issues with my pool water. No cloudiness, no algae, no nothin'. Thanks to the forum, and you in particular, have helped me answer all my questions. Joe

PH going up faster than normal

OK, thanks, so with TA of around 80 for new tap water, I should expect my PH to rise when adding water? If so, I can just add MA as needed, but since it seemed an unusually high amount, just checking nothing else was wrong. I check FC daily and CYA is 40 so I am OK there

PH going up faster than normal

OK measured fresh tap water and the TA is about 80. My test kits says the pools water should be 100-120 for a chlorine pool, but frankly I do not know what to do about this? I never remembered adding muriatic acid so regularly. If this is just a fundamental of my water source I guess there...

haha, I never thought to measure the TA of my fill water, duh! thanks

PH going up faster than normal

I only use liquid chlorine and my PH usually goes up very slowly. I usually have to adjust with Muriatic acid once a month or so. Lately it is rising very rapidly with having to add some muriatic acid weekly. I have added some water, not much, an no other chemicals, any ideas? ...or is it...

    Tabs in Skimmer

OK. Two floaters just does not seem enough for me, so got two more. Four floaters seems like a lot though :)

    Tabs in Skimmer

I use Liquid Chlorine 100% of the time...except on vacation. The floaters with tabs are OK, but I have had mixed results. What is the opinion about tabs in the skimmer if I set the pump timer to run 24/7 while gone?

    Testing for FC

yes.thanks, well aware, as I need to raise it a little right now due to some necessary pool drainage

    Testing for FC

CYA is around 40, raising it a bit now using tabs

    Testing for FC

thanks. I too keep FC in check every day, but I use a lot of chlorine (almost 1 gal per day), now I am thinking that maybe I am not using enough powder, so if you cant use too much, great, I will use more if my readings have maybe have been low

    Testing for FC

I daily use the FC powder test (R0870/871) test in 10ml water. Today I had two widely different treading, although also from two different places in the pool. One had a heaping spoonful and one use a REALY heaping spoonful (which gave the higher reading), so can you use too much powder in the...

    Pool Floater for Chlorine Tabs

alternatively, I could set pump to run 24/7 while on vacation and put them in skimmer?

    Pool Floater for Chlorine Tabs

I typically only use LC for my pool, but I am doing some testing using chlorinating tabs for future vacation times. I have a 22K gal pool with two floating chlorinators and the 3 inch tables added are broken up for quicker dissolving, even so I am only getting 2.5 ppm so having to add LQ each...

    PH has risen significantly

Maybe it’s not The liquid chlorine that is raising my PH maybe it’s just the water in our area not sure but in any case usually a small amount of muratic acid lower back right away

    PH has risen significantly

My free chlorine is about 6.0. That’s funny that you say that liquid chlorine does not affect pH I have always found that liquid chlorine slowly lowers the pH and tablets slowly raise the pH. Since I generally only use liquid chlorine I have to add acid every other week or so a small amount but...

    PH has risen significantly

I follow all of the guidelines here and have had no issues in 1.5 years. My PH rose (which of course it does via adding liquid chlorine), but after adding significant amounts Muriatic acid (couple of pints) it is staying high via the drop test. Very odd as adding a small amount of muriatic...

    Winter FC

OK, I have just had my first trouble free year with TFP!!! Now winter is approaching, wonder about FC levels: Does it need to change now that it is colder, i.e. no algae growing in the cold, can it be lower? Still jug dump chlorine (no SWG) or add pucks? If pucks, how much is needed in the...

    Pool pump in Winter

thanks! I run now in winter a really low RPM for around 8 hrs. Perhaps I should run at highs RPM ( for skimming) and less hours. Nice to know that amount of circulation in winter (yes, I keep the pool "open") is not so critical, so will adjust accordingly

    Pool pump in Winter

I have learned a lot about pool chemistry this year. First year no Algae at all! Before TFP I was told that even in winter you need to run the pool pump 8 hrs or so even in the winter. I reduce the RMP to save money, but in one of my posts this summer regarding pool chemistry I was told that...

will ash from fire raise my pools PH

I am in Northern CA, with tons of fires around us and lots of smoke. My PH had been holding steady but suddenly jumped higher. Can this be from the smoke and some ash from the fires?

A little different - Crushed Tablet Trichlor

My CYA is a bit lower than I originally thought (30 vs 40), so to raise it I was going to smash some tabs (pretty easy to do as they come in plastic wrap) and throw the powder into the skimmer. Any thoughts? I know, "not the skimmer!" but will be running the pump and will dissipate quickly...I...

    Vacation

Thanks, never used Cal Hypo and have no experience, my calcium level is pretty low so I understand that is the only downside but in my case I guess It’s not gonna be a problem. No problem with using it with liquid chlorine? Do they make Cal hypo tablets?
