    maxflo vs hayward pump issues

the digital interface is not working this season, although I've been able to get the pump to work a bit. The pump starts but now it slows and I'm having a good deal of trouble getting it to prime...late today it just stopped working altogether. Can I just replace the interface (3200lcd) or do I...

    seeking a new pool heater

hi, my pool heater (hayward brand) finally quit last year and I'm looking to purchase a new one. I believe my pool is 33,000 gallons and has an attached spa (in ground). Any advice before I start collecting quotes? I get a lot of "little missy" interactions from pool guys and my husband always...

    could use some advice

hi, my husband jack always dealt with the pool and really well. Unfortunately, he passed away last year and it's all on me now. I have someone to open the pool, but I cannot get the Quantum Dolphin to work, light turns on but unit doesn't roll. No idea what to do and pretty frustrated. Any...

    sand filter won't backwash

Hi, The sand filter went in early this summer and was working fine (there have been SWG issues, but I could at least backwash filter no problem). I had houseguests and one of them helpfully went out to see why pool wasn't circulating, became very happy they could get it to "work" but when I...

    crystal pure salt cell

Hi, thanks for the wonderful advice earlier about getting my pool back to blue after it went green on me. Now I'm wrestling with the salt cells. Purchased a new one since ours was about three years old and got it installed, but it appears the cell and control board are not talking to each other...

    please help

Hi, My name is Lisa and this was previously my husband's account. He took GREAT care of our 30,000 gallon pool with salt cell for the past five years. We live in the NW suburbs of Chicago. Jack was diagnosed with glioblastoma brain cancer in January and has declined cognitively so he cannot...

Normal opening except something sandy in the pool

Happy spring, everyone! This is my 5th time opening my pool. It's usually pretty predictable. We get some organics that get past the mesh cover over the winter, so the water is a little cloudy, but it was still 53 degrees, and a couple days of running the filter and it's nearly crystal clear...

    Amerlite replacement

I'm looking for a replacement for my aging Amerlites. Anyone have any experience with these? PoolTone 16 Color LED Pool Light 12 or 120 Volts SS Rim 15 - 150 FT (11 inch diameter)

    Wimpy spa jets

I have an inground gunite spa that flows into the pool. It has 8 spa jets that are separately plumbed (2" PVC) to two Sta-rite max-e-pro 1.5hp spa pumps. There are two dedicated 2" circuits and each feeds 4 jets. This is an older pool and we've been in the house for three years. The pumps were...

How bad are these deck cracks?

I'm starting my third year with this pool. The deck was allegedly ground down, repaired and reapplied before we bought the house. I'm seeing cracks developing along the perimeter, about 10" from the coping. How bad is this? It was also replastered and I don't see any issues in the pool.

    I love my dolphin, but...

Sometimes I just want to quickly clean up a few little bits of debris from the bottom of my pool. Like before a party when the pool is spotless except for some little bits of leaves. Does anyone have experience with a decent portable (cordless) hand-vac on a pole?

Pureline SWG show higher salt than test kit

Hi everyone- The diagnostics on my Pureline SWG are: Salt: 3300 Temp: 84 Voltage: 23.3 Amperage: 8.38 Output: 48% Instant: 3700 Model: AT-5 Rev: R-646 Cell: T-15 My Taylor test kit results say my salt level is 3000ppm. The recommended range for the SWG is 3200 to 4000. I trust my test (and...

Pool math - setting FC target

I might be missing something obvious. How can I make my FC Target stick? Every time I enter a test result, the target FC says 8. With an SWG and a CYA of 70, I'm targeting 5, but I have to enter that manually every time. And since I'm forgetful and compulsive, I have to Google the chlorine/CYA...

    Mystery pipes and spa jets

This will be my third summer in this house (and pool) Last summer, I finally found replacement internals for my spa jets. They're Hydro Air Microssage, and there are eight of them in the spa. There are two (new) Max-E Pro 1.5 HP spa pumps, with four jets on each one. Flow to the jets is not...

    CYA over winter

Closed without incident last year. CYA was 70. (I have a SWG) I pumped out about 18" of water and put on my new mesh safety cover. I opened this weekend to a relatively clean pool. We've had a lot of rain and snow the past month and the water was just about up at a proper level. I spent the...

    Another run-time question

Seems like I'm seeing more people running their SWG at 100% for short periods of time. I thought the advantage of an SWG was the slow and steady infusion of sanitizer over extended periods providing stable levels. That's what permits the associated lower chlorine levels - reduced spikes and...

    To lower TA or not?

Just opened after a long, cold winter... My numbers in general are good, but I have a question on TA. Right now, it's 130. The "Water Balance for SWG" article says TA should be "60 - 80 ppm (THIS IS IMPORTANT!)" but the article on lowering TA says not to lower TA just to aim for a number unless...

New (to me) spa with no jets

We bought the house last year and I spent most of the summer trying to find jets for the spa. There's a pic below of the opening. The overall face is about 4" in diameter. The internal thread is 2 1/2". I can't tell if the jet internal should thread directly into this fitting, (I can't find...

Close the pool, keep the spa open?

I searched and found a few posts on this, but nothing definitive. It will be bloody cold here before long, but as I get ready to close the pool (for the first time...) I (or, more accurately, my wife) am interested in keeping the spa open for at least a few months. I can isolate the spa plumbing...

    AutoPilot or...

I'm pretty close to pulling the trigger on an SWG. The Auto Pilot looks great, and although I don't need the pump relay, I like the other features. I think the manifold design is really smart. I'm stuck, though, with the Pureline SWGs that Inyopools is selling. They're ridiculously cheap. I...

    Spa return jet size?

We moved in to a new house this year and with the help of the fine people here at TFP, our pool is open and waiting for warmer weather. Today's question is about spa return jets. There are two spa pumps plumbed to 8 returns. The returns are threaded, but they're something bigger than 2". I...

Is my VS Pump too small?

I just moved into a house with a fairly large pool. It has a Hayward Maxflo VS2303 pump. According to my FloVis, the pump moves about 30 GPM at 1800 rpm and 60 GPM at 3200 RPM. That seems a little on the low side to me, but not bad. The filter pressure is between 4 & 8 PSI, depending on pump...

Replace seals on a Jandy ball valve?

Just bought a house with a pool. My first. Thanks to everyone here who has helped so much already! I'd be lost w/o TFP! The suction side of my pump is fed by a 3-port diverter fed by three 2" pipes. (Spa, Skimmers & Main, L to R) Each has a ball valve. The pool is fairly old and wasn't...

First numbers from my pool - what now??

OK - New pool for me. My first. The house was a foreclosure and renovation. it's still pretty cold here but I wanted to get the pool filled and running so I would know asap if there were any hidden problems. The water is a little cloudy. I've added nothing to it yet. I just did my first test...

    Hello from another Chicagoan!

We just bought a new house with a pool. I have zero pool experience. The house was a foreclosure / renovation and the sellers did a lot of cosmetic work on the pool. The mechanical side, unfortunately, needs some work. I've been lurking TFP and gotten lots of great info. I'm filling the pool...

    Missing parts and mystery pipes

Opening my pool for the first time. (My first pool...) The house is a foreclosure / renovation. I found a few return jets hiding in the shed, but I need a bunch more. There are 8 returns in the spa and 5 in the pool. Any rhyme or reason to what I should get for each? I have a 1/2", a 3/4" and a...

New house, old pool - opening questions

We bought a house in mid February. The pool was professionally closed last year, drained to below the returns and covered with a tarp, and looks to be in great shape. We removed the tarp this week and the water is crystal clear. Before that, the pool was abandoned over a winter (foreclosure) and...
