I have gained a lot reading here. Thank you. I have a big slide that has a 15 hp pump with a 6 inch line I want to figure out a cost effective way to supply the pump safely. My ideas so far are to put in 4 main drains and gravity over to a sump well 9 feet deep then the pump for the slide pulls out of that or a large wall grate that extends above the top of the water line and make a stainless box that the pump for the slide pulls out of. I have not built this pool yet but want to get it ordered. It's a 20x40 rectangle. (Yes, I understand the danger of suction from a pump.)

Based on what i can find on the pump it's probably 1200 gpm. It has a 6 inch inlet and outlet and is 15 hp. I bought the slide with no documentation and haven't found a brand. It is a figure 8 manufactured slide that I disassembled.
You need to do more research before deciding what to do.

What make and model for the pump?
At 1,200 GPM, the suction should be 10" and the return should be 8".
You will need multiple drains that can provide the proper flow rates.

If you put in enough grates, it should be safe.
The grates need to supply the same flow either way.
I would not load the grates more than 80% of their rating.
So, you would need enough grates to supply about 1,500 GPM to the pump.
If each grate is rated at 300 GPM, then you will need at least 5 grates.

That's 20 gallons a second, which is 167 lbs of water per second.
That's a lot of force and flow.
Can you show the pump motor label?
I'm not getting the whole picture here. A slide normally requires a quarter inch or 3/8" feed line.......,Maybe 2-4 gpm.
Your 1200 gpm pump sound absurdly excessive to me......unless, of course your slide is a quarter mile long or so.

Slide came from a city pool that was getting a new one. It;s a figure 8 that starts about 20 feet up.

I looked briefly at something similar but my insurance guy squealed like a stuck pig. My mistake for calling him, probably.

How did you determine that the pump would produce 1,200 GPM?
How did you determine that 1,200 gpm was the correct flow for the slide?
Did the pump originally go with the slide?
Did you ever use the slide when it was working or see it in action?

The pump did come with the slide. I looked at it and it was 10 horsepower 1765 rpm not 15. I don't remember how I came up with 1200 gpm. I never saw it working but im sure it did. I am having trouble posting pictures.

Is your pool well large enough to accommodate someone exiting this 20 feet tall slide?
Yes, there are minimum design standards for this.
You may want to check with your insurance. God forbid something happens and you didn't account for the pool well or other items. Insurance may balk at covering it.
Better safe than sorry.

Be aware of the mounting requirements for a structure that large with what would amount to a few tons of moving water on it and then putting a family member atop it.
