Was just thinking about the following after reading gizmos, noodles..... Does the gizzmo or jug or what ever is being put into the skimmer for winterizing, does it have to be tall to reach almost to the skimmer cover. I see pools with a deep skimmers and the jugs sit quite low on the bottom. Is the protection only till the top of the jug or even the 6 or 8 inches above the jug height where the jug would not penetrate the ice when the pool fills from rain or snow and then freezes.

Skimmer gizmos are there for two reasons, firstly to plug the whole, secondly to collapse inward if ice builds up. Those of us that are anal cut up two noodles and fill it completely with them.
Fill the entire skimmer? That's an interesting idea. I've always used the anti freeze jug with some anti freeze left in it but that gets me to the top so i'm ok with that.
Leaving antifreeze in the jug only limits how much it will collapse as ice forms around it. $3 worth of noodles will fill it completely and never a worry of cracks. Even if the water leaves rises above the mouth of the skimmer.
