So this happened

Just note that PVC unions can be a blessing AND a curse. All unions require the presence of an o-ring to make a water tight seal, therefore leaks are always a possibility. And I would be very wary of putting a union on the suction side of a pump as suction leaks are a nuisance and o-rings only increase the chances of that nuisance showing up. Is using a threaded nipple annoying if you have to change out a pump, yeah I guess so. Bit how often are you planning to change out a pump (and, no, even in cold climates pumps can be left outdoors). But if you’re doing any significant PVC work at the pad, using a union is going to save you exactly 3 seconds on a 4 hour job … a properly installed threaded nipple will not leak and will go the distance. Certainly up to you but there is a case to be made for keeping the complexity and number of potential leaks to a minimum.

I will be bringing my 3HP mortgage payment inside for the winter. I know. I know. It *can* handle the elements. That's terrific. But I see no reason to leave expensive electronics with moving parts in a snow drift.

But. EXCELLENT point for most of the country. Maybe it will make a future reader think ahead. If it wasn't for the winter, my old pump never would have needed to come apart in 10 years. (y)

Did we mention and acid injector? you should really look into it!

Wow! Congrats, @Newdude! So far everything looks great!

I’m left with 2 wishes here - one, I want to start choosing your liner for you, and two, I want a little house for my robot!

Sorry guys, we had a beautiful day yestersay and had a marathon day of spring chores to catch up on. The snowblower is winterized and (summerized?), the shed is unpacked, and the lawnmower got its inaugural run for the season. I also got a head start patching the cut sprinkler lines, I had to figure out what was what, so it was a bit time consuming.

Oooooooooh. And I pulled the forms on my equipment pad. Can anyone artistically inclined come draw Han Solo on it ? It REALLY looks like he should be trapped in there. 20220423_135859.jpg

On that note. At this point in time the only suggestion I have for Newdude when he considers a liner is to avoid liners with a print over white backing. When we bought our house we thought the liner was white. When we had it replaced we could tell that it was originally blue but the print on it overtime had completely faded to white. When we had the liner replaced our only concern was the longevity of the liner. Our pool guy recommended this particular liner and claims that he has installed lots of these over the years and even ones he installed 10 years ago still look brand new. This one is printed on an electric blue backing. It was installed 3 years ago and still looks brand new. Don’t pick one with a white backing, as those are more prone to fading.

I am late to the party...but I made it. Congrats on getting this going, it looks like you are off to a great start. That sandy dirt looks much easier to dig than what I had to deal with.

And the pump will be unioned with these, not the mamby pamby ones that slip over the pump threading.
Here is a little tip on the Schedule 80 threaded Unions from plumbing store. I love them and have several in my setup to make it easy to change out/access things in the future. The problem is that companies change the specs on their unions and suppliers change brands. So 3 years from now when you need to replace a part or section of your pad plumbing and need the male/female half of a union to match up to your existing union....you may or may not be able to find it. I have 1.5" and 2" unions in my pad plumbing and I went and bought 3 or 4 extras of each size that are exactly like the ones I have installed. I put them in my "pool plumbing fittings" tote. They are not expensive...I would pick up some extras to save you some headache down the road.

Crew is back to install a dry well per code for waste and backwashing (not applicable with cart filter )

20220430_132656.jpg

Originally I had a long discussion with the GC about using a 3 way before the filter for a waste line into the yard. Now we are doing a dry well per code. Does anyone think this will suffice with the 3HP intelliflo if they dig it down to where the sand starts ?

In theory I'd have unlimited draining into the sand but one time I needed to dump half my pool and it was 17k gallons.

Thoughts on how much this dry well could handle without flooding the basement ? I'm sure it could handle a 2 or 3 inche drain after a big rain, but how much is too much ?

Should I still put the waste line in the yard after the fact and never need to use the drywell?

I have no concerns with flooding the neighbors which is why the code came to be in the first place. Nobody would ever know, care or be affected if I added a waste line after the fact but if I can get it done as part of the build, I'd rather get it for free.

I had a good chat with the #2 guy as #1 can't seem to remember anything. Like our long discussion about using a waste line in the yard without even mentioning the dry well. 🤦‍♂️

#2 said he has used them alot while doing weekly servicing and he has to wait for 20 mins after 5-10 mins of draining. I pointed out how many gallons I'd have after a big rain (bonus points as we were talking from inside the pool and he stopped to look around as it sunk in)

So #1 and #2 agreed it would all come down to the mood of the inspector on inspection day. The waste line to the yard is shelved for now. Wait. I mean. It's not up to code and therfore must be stricken from the long term plans. My bad.
