I am just a DIYer trying to learn more about my pool and specifically how to update and old Pentair Intellitouch system i9+3. I recently installed a screenLogic and would like to sync my time/date to phone. I think I might have the old firmware.

Welcome! What firmware versions are on your Intellitouch and Screenlogic?
I would guess the "sync time/date to phone" option is a Screenlogic thing rather than a firmware feature in the Intellitouch... don't see anything in the Intellitouch firmware notes about it.
The firmware on the Screenlogic can be updated using updater programs available on pentair's site.
the Intellitouch (and/or indoor/wireless controllers) can only be updated with a device programmer for the microcontroller

- If you want to do the DIY approach, here's the thread on how to: How to perform firmware upgrade on Pentair* controllers
- Sometimes a local pool shop that does Pentair equipment can come out and flash the new firmware (the fees on this seem to vary wildly)
- I can update it for you as well, but you'd have to remove your board and send it to me - pm if interested
