Hack My Pool

Well, she can take one. If it dissolves quickly, put it in the sock. If not, then...

Okay… what sort of other voodoo are y’all into because this whole “vitamin c in a sock” just blew my mind…

This rust was NOT budging during the many many fills and now it’s “poof” gone!

Bye Felicia!

It took quite a bit of Vit C to get the liner near Joe Dirt cleaned but it’s sparkling now!

Three WHOLE DAYS without JD and I am loving it! Chlorine is holding strong over night, might need a smidge of water after today, but nothing I can’t manage (no hose water allowed). Ignore the grass… ugh! And I Spy blue goggles on the bottom! IMG_7977.jpeg

Yup! Its like magic 🪄
i have white steps & would pull them out & bleach/scrub them twice a year but they still looked dirty. Then it dawned on me it was iron and the bleach was just making it worse. I grabbed some bar keepers friend spray (which is a mix of oxalic acid & Ascorbic acid) & like magic- no scrubbing- instantly white! I use it on my tub but never thought about my pool stuff.

I’m half tempted to try it in my tubs/sinks inside the house… I just had the interior filters replaced this winter and I’ve seen insane improvement since going up a filtration level but now I have older rust stains to contend with.

SCIENCE!!!! 🧫🧪🥼🤯

TA will continue to come down, just manage yourpH. Yes, get your FC up and keep it in range. You might add 10ppm or 20ppm of CYA, 40-50 this time of year will help with FC demand.

Okay Pool School gives me a little list of what to look for. It also mentions that some will raise FC levels. Do I need to add this stabilizer and measure both the CYA and FC, before adding more chlorine for FC?

And I’m probably going to avoid the granules - I read to keep the pump running and don’t backwash/rinse for a week (that won’t work for me and this rusty bucket). I backwash when my PSI doubles (usually below 5).

Liquid is expensive and hard to use. The dry CYA is cheap and easy to use.

Add 20ppm of CYA, use the sock method. When the sock hits the pool your FC target goes up to CYA of 50. Link-->FC/CYA Levels
Okay I’m at a 30 now, targeting 20+ is 50 ppm. Pool Math says 14 oz.

Now this sock thing… I can use socks, panty hose… and apparently either will work. I don’t have a skimmer, so should I finagle this thing by the return? I could move my ladder closer to the return and harness it around my ladder if that works…

Side note - before I found TFP, I was using Reddit to hack my pool. Those people really need to find TFP, stat. A guy just posted that his pool store said a CYA of 200 was stable, and he is now out over $1000 in chemicals and water trying to rebalance everything.
