Getting antsy...

& get some dry stabilizer. Enough to get to 30ppm to start- about 4 lbs. which is generally how much is in a bag. Use the sock 🧦 method.
Without it your fc will just keep being consumed by the sun rapidly. It will also keep the chlorine from being so harsh.
Follow the FC/CYA Levels & use the fas/dpd fc test from here on out. The oto (yellow test) is basically just answering the question “do i have any chlorine or not?” Its not very accurate & doesn’t differentiate between fc & cc

Thanks all - a lot to digest here. So he said he added a quart of acid but he just kind of walked around the pool and dumped it out of gallon jug. Seemed like it was a heavy quart for sure. I bought 3 jugs (2.5 gallons each) of chlorine and a couple bottles of acid. I didn’t think to ask what the percentage was at the pool store. They’re the regular yellow jugs. Pool math says add 55 ounces. Does that sound right? Do I just pour it in slowly around the pool? I actually just read the label and they say 10.5% active ingredients. I’m guessing that’s the number I’m looking at?

So I called a buddy of mine who does pools for a living and he said to dump a whole 2.5 gallon jug in but that I really needed stabilizer. He said 5 pounds in the skimmer. Then test the next day. My question now is why wouldn’t the builder want this done? Is it a problem of the pebble surface being too new? The builder is coming back in 3 weeks to do the salt and I would imagine they wouldn’t want to show up to a mad customer with a green pool…

PLEASE, for your new pool, do NOT depend on the builder. He has already allowed your pool to get cloudy which is indictive of a possible algae outbreak :(

Do NOT dump the stabilizer (CYA) in the filter. Here at TFP we have done many "experiments" on the best way to add CYA to a pool. I was a part of the experiment back a few summers ago. What we found was it is best to put the CYA powder in a sock, yes a sock, and hang it over the side of the pool from a pole of some sort right in front of a return jet with the pump on to mix it in as it dissolves into the water. You can squeeze the sock to help it dissolve faster if you want.

You do need to get that chlorine into your pool asap. Use Pool math to see how high 2.5 gallons of 10% chlorine will push your FC up. Use this chart FC/CYA Levels using 0 for your CYA level until you get some into your pool. You do not want to go to high with it being now plaster.

Thanks again - it says it would raise FC by 21. I’m guessing that’s way over the target of 3?
Yes that’s too much! Add 3-5ppm , pour it slowly infront of a return & brush the area.
Add stabilizer to a sock 🧦, tie it off & you can sit it in the skimmer basket & once it gets squishy squeeze it. About 2#’s will fit in a sock well.
If u have 2 skimmers do 2 socks. You need about 4lbs total. When it gets real squishy you can hang it in front of a return & squish it. Don’t let it touch the pool surfaces

What’s the time frame for checking levels once I’ve added chemicals?
Just to clarify what Kim said... 15 minutes is good for liquid chemical additions.

A day or so for testing the CYA, after it has fully dissolved. Maybe a couple days. Takes time to fully dissolve and disperse. Don't want you testing it too soon and adding a whole bunch more thinking it isn't there.

Awesome info keeps coming - thanks!
I just got this from the builder showing where I need my levels during the first 30 days. On pool math what is cya called in the “effects of adding”. Is it dry acid?
Edit - oops just saw dry stabalizer...
