MURRIETA
Hi everyone,

I'm at the end of my rope... I'm sure I have a blockage somewhere but can't get any pool professional to help me. I've had 3 people here and no help, the last one told me not to call him again, there was nothing he could do, and he didn't even try to troubleshoot the problem, and told me my suggestion (that there is a blockage somewhere) was impossible.
My pool has worked great for several years with no issues. In March I added a new PoolRx filter that I've been using for the past 3 years that solved my constantly turning green pool. It's supposed to be a slow release that lasts about 9 months. After installing, I came out the next morning and my pool was a neon teal milk color and my metal levels were off the charts. I spent a few months cleaning, constantly removing and cleaning my filter (degreasing as advised) and finally got my metals within a high, but normal range. Everything was back to normal for about a week and then I lost pressure. Dropped and is holding steady at 10psi. no bubbles in the jacuzzi and not enough pressure for the vac to work.
I read all the posts I've found here relating to this issue and replaced the pressure gauge, ortega check valves, jandy 3 way valves, backflush valves and there are no visible leaks anywhere. I purchased new grids and added new DE, but I noticed that the DE has not fully collected on the grids. I'm sure there is a blockage somewhere between the skimmer and the filter. But 3 different pool professionals have told me that it isn't possible and they won't help me and they can't snake the lines or offer any other suggestions as to how to unclog. The last person told me to drain the pool and replace the water, which doesn't seem like that would be the issue, as my water tests show I'm within normal ranges, and of course, my area is now in draught restrictions so I can't get a varience to replace the water, but will do so if you all advise me to.
Any other suggestions you can provide? How can I snake the drain myself? Couldn't find any videos... how can I find a professional in my area that will snake the drain? or should I call a normal plumber??
Trying to put my house on the market and need the pool to look good asap, and don't have the funds to completely rebuild the pool. Thank you!

Ann,

I too doubt you have any kind of "blockage" that is causing the problem, but who knows???

Show us a few pics of your equipment pad and I'm sure we can get you pointed into the right direction.

Also..

Tell us if you have single speed pump, 2-speed pump, or Variable speed pump?

How many skimmers do you have?

Thanks,

Jim R.

I guess the question is why do you think there's a blockage? A filter pressure of less than 10psi is great.

Is the PoolRx filter thing the little thing you drop in the skimmer? If so, I assume you've taken it out as that can restrict flow if its got junk in it.

Not saying you have a blockage but if you do try this at your own risk 🤓

I had a blockage between a spa return and pump and had the same issue getting anyone out.
One pool guy messed with it a few hours and got it better but still 80% clogged. Charged me $250 and gave up.
Because it wasn’t 100% clogged the pressure stuff didn’t help.

What I ended up doing was changing my pump plumbing so it pulled from one return and blew out the plugged one. PVC is cheap so other then time it wasn’t that hard to do.
Did it for a few seconds and leaf’s came out but when I let it run for a little longer a chunk of plaster came out!
It needed a lot of water to push it out.
I am not a plumber or pool guy so not recommended it 😎 I didn’t know what else to do but try it and it worked

Annette,

Welcome to TFP and so sorry you're ending up here with this problem. But you're not alone, many people end up here with pool problems and pool store/cleaning service frustration. Sounds to me you've gotten some very conflicted advice that's not solving your issue and probably making your pool worse so you have to spend even more $ and it still isn't working so you spend more $... this goes on 'till you end up here. Good news is we can help you solve the problem the quickest and the cheapest since we don't sell anything. All we have is some of the best experts in the world that volunteer their time to help members. We need more information to help you get your pool in shape for sale of home quickly:
  • You mention metals and this indicates you've been victim to one of the most common pool store gimmicks that mess up your pool - algaecides containing metals like copper, silver or others. Can you give us the background on what you've used?
  • Photos of the pool and equipment
  • How are you disinfecting right now? Chlorine tablets, salt pool, liquid chlorine are the most common answer.
Usually getting your pool back in decent shape requires some treatment that consists of:
  • adding a lot of liquid chlorine after you get a test kit and 5 ppm per day until you get a recommended kit
  • removal of water to get rid of the common offender chemicals sold by pool stores that cause more trouble than they're worth (CYA from trichlor tablets), metals.
  • Sometimes metal removal compounds are needed
Since time is of the essence for you it may be easiest and quickest just to replace your water and treat it right so the pool will stay in shape and not revert to a mess very quickly. No matter what you do you'll need a proven test kit asap. We recommend two and we don't sell either but you can get them pretty quick Test Kits Compared While you're waiting for the kit add 5 ppm liquid chlorine per day and read this: ABCs of Pool Water Chemistry and this:SLAM Process. Ask any questions you may have here and you'll get quick expert help. Even if you are so driven to get this done quickly you just replace the water you'll need this to keep it that way 'till you sell. If you like the results you may want to pass the info along, your buyers will be able to avoid the problems you've had.

I hope this helps.

Chris
