Being Held Hostage By My Pool!!! (aka Intelliph installation)

Yeah. Same with me and scuba. Been diving for 30 years. I KNOW BETTER, yet still did it.hopefully I will post pictures of my installation later this week. I am looking forward to not handling MA every week.

Lately I've been posting here and there about my good experiences with Pentair support. Today was a good example!! I had them on the phone a few days ago, about my SWG, and thought to mention an issue I have with my new-ish IntellipH. Either the packer or I didn't put the lid on carefully enough and crimped the big o-ring which seals the lid to the base. Rendered it leaky. Pentair support only casually asked when I purchased it (more than 60 days ago), and even though I installed it myself, once we figured out the part number they said they'd ship me a new o-ring. Just got it, along with four others (five to a package, apparently), and now I'm all set. Maybe they'll dry out before I use 'em up? Maybe not, not sure what they're made of. So I double-Ziplocked the spares. Yay, Pentair! I'm not sure what the actual warranty period is, but I bought it on Amazon so I don't expect it was a year. Even if it was, they got me the part in a few days and didn't put me through the ringer. Nice.

On an unrelated note, except more good news, and not worthy of its own thread: I've been disappointed in my pool temp the last few weeks. Down to 78-80. I'll get in, but the kids don't like it. This with the solar heater running 7-10 hours a day (the extra three hours sometimes gets me an extra degree). And we've still got 80-90+ air temps here, sunny days, no rain. What gives? Sun angle? Probably the cooler nights. So I walked across the street and put my thermometer in my neighbor's pool for a few minutes. Same size, same color. He's only got 72°, maybe less if I had left it in longer. So my solar heater is definitely working, giving me an extra 6 degrees at least. And that's pretty much the difference of me getting in or not. Cool beans.

Water hit 80° yesterday up here in Santa Cruz just a little north of you - but in general it has been dropping every day it seems for the past 2 weeks...today it is sitting at 76° currently - mind you it is a cool mid 60's foggy day.

I think the cool nights are the biggest hit - along with a sun angle that is close to the same as March means much less warming...I find this time of year I get more heat with my pool open, only when it is sunny, compared to keeping the safety cover closed (we don't have a heater or solar heat).

Too lazy for cover, you might have heard me say before. Interesting that you're getting 80 with no heater, in a much cooler area. I was just at the Boardwalk Friday/Saturday. I think it was in the 70s on Saturday. Are you covering at night? That might be the difference.

75-76 is around my pain threshold, unless I've been workin' out hard, then 70-72 is fine. So I might get a few more weeks of swim season if the weather holds, and I get off the couch!! ;)

I got talked into that Boardwalk event where you show up Friday, pitch a tent on the asphalt, right in the middle of the Boardwalk, and spend the night! Heard of it? Craziness. Didn't sleep a wink the entire night!! What was I thinking?!? They feed you dinner on Friday, and you get total "free play" in the arcade. And access to the carousel, then a movie on the sand. Then sleepy-sleepy (otherwise known as tossy-turny) and then it's breakfast, another couple hours in the other arcade (mini golf, etc), and then unlimited rides the rest of the day. It was actually great fun, and the kids had a blast. I got to ride my favorite coaster, they got to play laser tag and mini golf! Cave train, haunted house, junk food and ice-cream!! Oh, what we do for our kids...

Sounds like lots of memories in the making right up there ^^^^ Did you at least have a pad under you? My poor aching back just thinking about the asphalt bed! If you did not go to "bed" did you get to keep playing? That just sounds so neat!

Oh, I don't sleep in a tent without my futon!! That wasn't the problem. We had unknowingly set up along the path the security guards used all night. Back and forth to their cars and office, every few minutes, big police shoes clonking by my tent, 2' from my head! No access to the arcade after 8:00PM...

Great reading. My son and I were discussing the pool temp Sunday. We are down to 82 after many days of plus 90s air temp. I haven’t pulled the trigger on the new heater yet but he enjoys the pool nearly every day. We are near the temp level I won’t be getting in unless I order the heater. I am going back with the same Raypak NG heater but have decided to order the commercial version. It’s 20 % higher but I believe based on everything I’ve read I have a good chance of at least breaking even on lower chances of maintenance and longer life.

I have a small NG heater. I've never turned it on (I'm too cheap)! Technically, with all the money I've saved since finding TFP and firing the pool guy, I should be able to afford it. Hmmmm....

Derb, I meant to mention this to you the other day. It looks like you attempted to include handy links in your signature, but they don't actually work as links. Wasn't sure if you were seeing that at your end...

Ah, yes - we have stayed away from that one. I like my sleep - so even if my son begged I wouldn't do it. Besides we can go anytime we want (and go often)...so just the idea of camping on the sand or the walkways doesn't do anything for me.

A few years ago our favorite cover band The Sun Kings played as part of that weekend event - we went for just the concert part of the festivities and got out of there quickly.

OK, perhaps the last of the tale of the IntellipH? Well, the latest chapter, anyway.

Part A

Acid supply was low. I filled an empty acid jug with twice-filtered soft water. And put it near the IntellipH. I donned my gear (gloves, eye protection and mask), and opened a fresh jug of 31% MA and put it near the IntellipH. I opened the IntellipH lid, grabbed both jugs, one in each hand, and poured them each into the hopper together, just as I would mixing tea and lemonade for my Arnold Palmer: matching both streams evenly, and aligning them to mix together before they hit the hopper. No explosions.

I wanted to see if I could mix the two quickly and easily in this fashion, without first pouring into a bucket, stirring, then trying to pour the bucket into the hopper. Seemed to work fine. Yes, I crossed the streams, but Egon was wrong: every molecule in my body did not explode at the speed of light.

If I'm understanding correctly, the acid into water rule is to avoid the heat generated, and the resulting reaction, by pouring water into acid. This mix'n'pour didn't seem to cause any of that, and everything went well with a minimum of drips and back splashes (from which I was well protected).

I may try mixing in the bucket next time, or not. This MO worked well this time.

Part B

The IntellipH has two primary defenses against leaking fumes to surrounding areas and metal. The o-ring that seals the lid to the hopper, and the vent. My o-ring had a slice in it, so I fixed that last week. That left the vent, which I addressed today. I connected a tube to it and tightened it up tight. Then ran the tube down, over, and up, about 6' over my pad, a few feet away from it. The tube ends, strapped to a vinyl fence post, and is well positioned to catch the breeze that usually runs through there. The end is about 4' to the nearest metal. We'll see how that works in the coming months/years.

The hopper vent is to the right of the motor, I ran the newly connected vent tube down and wire-tied it under the conduit for a little protection from the sun. That line, and the others that run out of the IntellipH are covered in polyethylene split loom tubing wire covers to give them a little relief from UV rays. Yes, that's my heater right next to the IntellipH. If it's not air tight now, that'll be the first to take the hit. And this pic will serve to document how much corrosion was already on the gas pipe.

The the tube runs up the wall, behind the vinyl post (again, for a little UV protection) and pokes up enough to catch the wind. I suppose I've planted it just right to waft around at the height of my head, but it's a minute amount, it's diluted 1:1, and it's going to be blown around with lots of other air molecules. I think I'm good.

Shoot, I just realized, staring at my pics, that I did this wrong. So I'll have to adjust tomorrow. The end of the tube shouldn't be pointing up like that, as rain will get in there and create a p-trap, because that line dips down first. I should run it straight up, to eliminate the possibility. But I'll likely just bend the end down, so it can't catch rain.

I'm not sure what the vent is doing. I think it's just allowing air to move back and forth, as the acid is used, and as the air and fluid in the hopper expand and contract with the ambient air temp. If water got into the vent tube, it wouldn't stop that action, but it wouldn't be ideal...

Hmm, I wonder if the air venting through the tube could condense, and create a trap, even with the end pointed downward. I really should run it straight up from the hopper. That's going to be ugly...

Not that I think the twice a year Paso gets a bit of rain will hit your tube, but you could drill a few holes in the side of the tube and plug the top.

The acid tank is right next to the heater?

Yes, twice a year would be nice! ;)

Yes, it is an unfortunate location, but pretty much the only one available. My gear is sandwiched between a walkway and a fence. It was either next to the heater, or next to the pump.

Since I've never turned on the heater, and don't ever plan to, if it get's ruined, so be it. I'm counting on the o-ring and vent doing their job, and if not the resulting corrosion showing up externally somewhere to give me a warning. Not sure how sound that logic is...

I thought about placing a bit of metal near the tank, and another near the end of the vent tube, to see if any corrosion was happening at either location. That experiment was going to be in your honor, Marty, as sort of a proof of concept. You had mentioned you might be interested in one of these if I could show they don't ruin everything around them...

The IntellipH requires annual maintenance: swapping out a few parts. I'll make checking that its vent tube is clear as one of the tasks:

Spring:

- clean filter
- check/clean SWG
- maintain IpH (new parts, check vent)
- lube o-rings (IpH, SWG, pump, filter)
- test and/or replace auto-fill valve
- leak test (turn off auto-fill and bucket test)
- check vacuum for needed repairs

What else?

Ok. 9 day update. So far my PH has been stuck at 7.8 ish . I initially had it around 7.5 - 7.6 when I started the Stenner. I’m took me three days to remember I had decided to dilute the MA 1/1 and realize I needed to double the output timer. In those 3 days it crept up to where it is now. Today, just to play with it a little, I added enough MA manually to bring it down to 7.4. I am interested in seeing if,no matter where I force the PH, it will hold that with the auto dosing.
No matter what, I am looking forward to a long stretch of time before I have to fool with MA. ( at least 22 weeks!!!! I started with 20 gallons).

All i I can say is I wish I had done this sooner. A true TFP pool now!! :lovetfp::rockon::party::party::whoot::cheers::cheers:

I haven't done any real testing of this theory, but I think I've noticed that my pH stays put better than it should, or at least better than I was expecting. It seems I should have had more trouble dialing in the right output than I did. And I've done that twice, once for 31% and again for 1:1 diluted 31%. Each time, it was a simple matter to get the output number just right, then the pH just stays put. Luxurious!

I talk (brag!) about my acid doser more than I should, but I can't help it. I'm glad to have a comrade that understands now what I do, a pool (that needs any amount of acid dosing) without a machine to do it is as silly as one without an SWG (or other chlorine doser). It's just too nice not to have these gizmos, and not to tell others about them!
