    Heater troubleshooting

I have a 10 year old Jandy Lite 2 LG millivolt heater. Pilot lights fine. The main burners have been failing to turn on intermittently when I push the ON switch. I followed all the troubleshooting steps and the only odd thing is all the voltages are low. Where it asks "Is voltage 200mv+?"...

Polaris hose tangles at low temperatures?

Hello all: I've noticed that the feed hose to my Polaris 380 gets all tangle up when the temperature drop down to the low 60s. I'm assuming its because the hose becomes less flexible at low temperatures and for some reason, this cause it to tangle up. This has happened for the last 5-10 years...

    CSI for winterizing

I see that CSI is a function of temperature - the lower the temperature, the lower the CSI. The difference between 85 degrees and 35 (our typical annual water temperature swings) is quite significant - ~0.5. Should I increase the CSI before closing the pool to the upper limit of ideal (ie +0.3)?

    Polaris customer service

Anybody had any recent contact with Polaris (Fluidra)? I need to get a replacement frame for my Polaris 380. Local dealer says I have to go through the manufacturer but I've tried calling and e-mailing over the last 2 months but they don't answer. They used to be very responsive and helpful...

Hopefully the pool bubble is over!

According to Thumbtack: "In the early days of the pandemic, everyone wanted a home with a pool. (Within months of March 2020, pool manufacturers reported seeing orders surge by as much as 200 percent.) Come on, what better way to ride out quarantine than with a blue water escape right in your...

    Muriatic acid ineffective.

OK, I've spent a couple of hours on the internet researching this one.......... Equivocal opinions (to say the least). I'm winterizing my pool and the pH was way too high (off scale on my Taylor 2005 kit pH measure). So I went to Lowes and got some muriatic acid. Looked a little strange when...

    Water balancing vs temperature

I am in the process of closing my pool for the winter. I have balanced the water for a perfect Pool Math CSI of 0.0 at the current temperature of high 60s. When I use the Pool Math calculator and change the temperature to 40 the CSI drops to -0.4 to -0.5. How does everyone handle this change...

Calcium carbonate instead of calcium chloride?

"Oh dear, the sky is falling" (says Eore) ;) I accidentally ordered powdered calcium carbonate instead of calcium chloride to raise the hardness in my pool. Can I use the calcium carbonate or must I toss it in the trash (the seller doesn't take returns)? Thanks,

    Copper in Tri-Chlor?

Just received an e-mail from TFP pointing to an article stating the copper is found in tri-chlor tablets, granules and sticks: https://www.troublefreepool.com/wiki/index.php?title=Copper_in_Pool_Water While some sources ("Blue") may contain copper, I'm not aware that it is in the majority of...

Bubbles in pump Only When using pool cleaner

I have a pool with a single skimmer/return. I use a skimmer plate and hose when I vacuum the pool. I had the pool plumbing pressure tested a couple of times and there are no leaks. But when I vacuum the pool, I have what appear to be bubbles in the pump basket. I'm pretty sure this isn't a...

CSI - Pool Math or Taylor nomogram?

I've been using the Taylor wheel nomogram that comes with their professional FAS-DPD kit for calculating CSI, and using this to keep it between -0.3 and +0.3. Just by chance, I thought I would try the Pool Math spreadsheet, expecting the same results. Imagine my surprise at seeing some pretty...

    Thread sealing

OK, I'm about to re-do the plumbing on my pool and am wondering how ro best seal the threads on the union fittings I'm going to use on the new MPV and pump (both 2" fittings). I'm leery of PTFE tape as I've used it many times before and find it's sealing to be hit or miss. I'm using screw-in...

Paging mas985 (or anyone else who can help with pump question)

OK, so I am about to upgrade my pump to a 2 speed - probably a Pentair Whisperflo. I have estimated my total head to be approximately 40-50 feet. Looking at the head curves for this product, a 1hp pump (1.5 SF) at a head of 50 ft would produce a flow rate of 75 GPM at high speed and at low...

    Pool water "balancing"

Hello all: I have an interesting dilemma. I have a recently renovated pool (10 months ago, TFP-maintained since, liquid bleach, muriatic acid, sodium bicarbonate) that has been eating muriatic acid for breakfast, lunch and dinner. It's a plain plaster finish and the calcium hardness hit my...

    Post-Florence pool

Well, my pristine TFP-maintained pool took a beating last night! We had about 6" of rain overnight and the water went from perfectly balanced crystal clear blue to murky cloudy green. FC was 8.0 (CYA 80, TA 80, CH 280, PH 7.5) prior to the rain and was ZERO this morning! Pool was overflowing...

    DE For Sand Filter

I'm using some DE in my sand filter to clear up some cloudiness in my pool water. Chemistry is as follows: FC 9.0 CC 0.0 CYA 50 pH 7.5 TA 100 CA 300 Looks good to me(?) I added a couple of cupfulls of DE slurries into the filter (making sure it dissolved as a slurry as I was doing this)...

Poll still using acid after 4 months

We had our pool renovated late last year (2017). New plaster was applied and the pool filled at the end of November. We are trying to keep the pH around neutral (7.5) but this has required a gallon of muriatic acid every week and is showing no signs of slowing. The pool chemistry is as...

    2" MIP x 1-1/2" slip union?

Anybody know of a 2" MIP x 1-1/2" slip union? I can find a 1-1/2 MIP to 2" union but not the other way around. I'm getting a Pentair Whisperflo pump (2" connections) but my pool plumbing is 1-1/2". I know I could get a 2" MIP x 2" slip union and use a reducer but I'm just trying to minimuze...

    Two speed pump question

I'm considering replacing my aging single speed pump with a two speed pump (don't want a variable speed pump for reasons specific to my setup). I would like it to run on low speed most of the time for maybe 12 hours a day and high speed for heating, cleaning (polaris), etc. But I'm wondering...

    Replacement pump....... again!

OK, I know this has been asked many times before but I need to replace my 20 year old single speed pump - Sta-Rite P2RA5E-124L pump, AO Smith B848 motor (1HP SF 1.65). I have a single suction pipe from the skimmer (no main drain) and 2 returns to the pool - all 1.5" PVC pipe. Hayward 24" sand...

    90 degree elbows or 45s?

I'm looking at re-doing all of the plumbing on my pool between now and next spring. I have about a dozen 90 degree elbows (not street elbows) on my equipment pad and am considering replacing each one with two 45 degree elbows. Will this significnatly reduce my head pressure or should I just...

    Yet another chlorine post.........................

OK, so I'm going cross-eyed reading all the chlorine posts on here! I have a question that I haven't found covered yet. First of all, I just had my pool renovated. Fiberglass walls were removed and replaced with shotcrete and the whole pool was plastered. Pool was filled with city water...

    variable speed pump efficiency

OK, so variable speed pumps are more efficient at lower speeds. So which would be the better choice, a 3HP intelliflo VS running at 1000rpm or a 1.5HP superflo VS speed running at a higher speed (2000 rpm?) for the same flow rate. Or, in accordance with the laws of thermodynamics, would they...

    Maxflo VS or intelliflo i1

OK, so I got some great info in my other thread comparing the older Pentair Superflo VS with the new superflo VS. My question now is do I go with the 1.5 (2.2) HP Superflo VS 342001 or the 1.0 (3.2) HP Intelliflo i1 011008? The Intelloflo i1 has a smaller impeller that I understand reduces...

    Starite Supermax VS pump

Hello all: I'm looking at replacing my 20 year old 1hp single speed Sta-rite P2R pump with a Sta-Rite Supermax VS 343000/343001 or Pentair Superflow VS 342001/342000. The Sta-Rite and Pentair are apparently identical pumps. However, my quetion is about the 000 vs 001 designations. The only...

    Polaris 380 replacement booster pump

Hello: My Polaris 380 booster pump (I believe it is the origina PB4-60, not the Halcyon Q model) is 15 years old and has always been noisy. However, this season it's gotten so loud you can't hear a conversation if you're sitting close to it - sounds like its about to self destruct. I would like...
