    Trip and fall and Covid

Well, we've been back from Pensacola for a week. The show (Brit Floyd) was magnificent. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Would have enjoyed it more if I hadn't fallen in the bathroom the first night and banged up both ankles! Luckily we had the wheelchair along, so my son pushed me from parking to the...

Dye or paint for vinyl liner?

My Bestway vinyl liner is faded, and I hate the checkered design on it anyway. Is there a dye you can add to the water or a paint that will stick to vinyl I could use to paint it dark blue?

    Above Ground Pool Brush

Does anyone know of an above ground pool brush head that doesn't start to shed bristles after 2 years? It's annoying as all get out to be brushing your beautiful blue TFPC pool and be leaving a bunch of white bristles to be sucked up by the skimmer. I've just bought my third brush head (2019...

FOR SALE 0.5 hp pump, 12" sand filter

Perfect for your first foray into real equipment for your above ground pool. Both are manufactured by Blue Torrent Pool Supplies; the pump is a Blue Torrent Hurricane 0.5 hp pump, the filter is a Blue Torrent Sand Shark 12" sand filter. No hoses, they all sprung a leak and you don't want to...

    Outlet Positioning

I'm planning to put in a second outlet in my 14x48 AGP. Could I install the new one lower than the existing outlet so that I have one outlet (the original) close to the surface and one (the new one) closer to the bottom? Seems to me that would help mix the layers of water better.

    More Fun With Plumbing

I have two leaks, one at the skimmer and one at the new outlet I installed. I know exactly what is causing them: 1. Skimmer -- Hayward Dura-Skim I put in 3 years ago. I cut the butterfly gasket and then I don't think I got them properly aligned, or screwed in as tightly as I should have. Then I...

    PVC Plumbing of Bestway AGP

I just finished the plumbing of my Bestway above ground pool, a project I've been wanting to do since I first got the pool. Many thanks to my DH Mike for doing the heavy lifting, and especially to the good folks on TFP who showed me it could be done and how to do it. I thought I'd pay it back by...

pH low, TA low -- which first?

Now that we have the plumbing done, it's time to open. I ran the tests today, and got this: FC 20 (hubby added a big wallop of chlorine yesterday) CC 0 pH 6.3 (color block test) TA 40 CYA 0 I know TA and pH are connected, and that pH at high Cl2 levels is not reliable. I'm pretty sure I know...

Started the Great Plumbing Project today!

I told hubby Mike that he can help as long as (a) he stops when I stop and (b) he goes back in the house when I do. No working on his own! It may take longer, but it'll get done on a comfortable, doable schedule. There's no rush. So today we hauled the pump and filter out to the pad, and...

    Harris 19" sand fulter

My new filter is a Harris 19" sand filter, going onto a Blue Torrent 1 hp single speed pump for an AGP. We were dry fitting everything and the filter has poly tubing that goes from the bottom which would reach to the top, and has a fitting on it so that you could fasten it to the top if you...

    New Plumbing

Weii, I'm back for my 4th year of pool ownership, and have decided to make the plunge (heh) and replumbing the pool. It's an above ground Best way pool, 15x4 feet. It had a 1/2 hp pump on it with a 12 inch sand filter. I'm moving up to a 1 hp pump and a 16 or 19 in sand filter, I forget which...

    It's Coming Down!!!

Finally! The big oak tree in the front yard is coming down tomorrow! That means no more tiny acorns, leaves, and random twigs and branchlets coming down on the lawn, cars, and most importantly the POOL!!! The thing is over 100 years old and beginning to rot from the inside. We had an arborist...

    Pronunciation

Remember, kiddies, it's muriatic acid. Mur-ree-at-ic. Not monetic, not mercuric, not murrick. I think if we are going to be using a chemical, we need to use the correct name. It's really a safety issue -- imagine going into a store and asking for motectic acid. No telling what you're going to...

Cloudy pool -- I knew it would happen

I've been having my son brush and vacuum the pool in the evenings, but the gilt has rubbed off the lily -- it's no longer great good fun. It's become a chore, he's neglected to do it daily, and now I have cloudy water. :poop:. So I'm doing an tonight, and most likely starting a tomorrow...

    Rigging a boost pump

I have a Polaris 360 aka wheely guy I got from a wonderful user here on TFP. I'm unable to use it until I get my new 1 hp pump set up, but I was wondering -- is there any way to rig up my old 0.5 hp pump through a second return for the Polaris? I mean using the old pump as a booster pump for the...

    Explain unions please

I know I'll need them, but I don't understand why. I'm going to plumb my new pump and filter this fall using 1.5 inch flexible pvc. I know I need gate valves on each pipe (outlet, inlet, and skimmer), but I have these questions: 1. What is a union? 2. What does it do? 3. How many will I need...

Sight glass for above ground pools

I got this last year, and it works like a charm. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0034EFQ4Y/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 Just thought I'd throw it out there again for all the newbies. It screws onto the backwash port on the pump, then you clamp your backwash hose onto it...

    Beware of Household Bleach!!

We've been using Laura Lynn household bleach for the pool (no additives) from Ingles, the local supermarket chain, and last year it always tested out at 6%. This year we've had two jugs that tested out at 0 -- basically water with just enough chlorine to make it smell! We tested by adding enough...

    Pump Leaking!!!

My pump is leaking at all the connections from the pool. Mike (hubby) has tightened everything as much as it will tighten, replaced Teflon tape everywhere we used it, and now we're at our wits' end. Any ideas? I'm considering just replacing the pump (and filter) with the 1 hp unit I bought last...

    New Car!

Back in March the transmission on our 20 year old Ford Ranger died. Since then we've been using son Patrick's Nissan Rogue to do groceries, doctor's appts, and suchlike. We had other things that needed to be done, so we got a second mortgage from Rocket Loans to pay for them and get a new used...

    Opening Day!

Opened yesterday to cloudy, but not green, water. pH 7.3, FC 2.0, TA 80, CYA 0. Added enough LC to bring it up to 7.0, had to get more CYA and LC. Got that today, will start SLAM tomorrow. While I'm not altogether thrilled we opened to a cloudy pool, at least we didn't open to the horrific mess...

    Chlorine at Wally World

I just went to my Wal-Mart to get some 10% chlorine, but someone got there before me and bought it all! Wal-Mart in Bremen, GA 30110. They had plenty of stock last night, but this morning, de nada. Got some CYA and a thermometer, though. Another heads up, they're storing the pool supplies...

    Well, its genuinely WINTER

Two cold fronts came through, dropped temps into y the 30s, and wrung every bit of moisture out of the air in the form of SNOW!! I've never seen it snow this early in the season. We usually see our first snow (if we get any at all) in January, and chances of snow run thru March. I once saw it...

We're deep in preparations for tomorrow -- cornbread for dressing is cooking, apple pies are being prepped, pecan pie (mine!!) Is ready to go, Sister Schubert Dinner Rolls are in the freezer, yams and marshmallows and pecans ready to be turned into yam casserole, and Mr Turkey is thawing nicely...

    Share your Pool floatie pics!!

My next project for 3D Design is to make a body part and relate it to something in your life. I'm making a sculpture of my leg and foot, then breaking it at the ankle, to represent my broken ankle. I want to connect it to the pool by painting the sculpture with pool floatie designs and colors...

    Mini-pool!

Our latest project in 3D Design was a scale model of an object that held meaning for us. I picked my pool! And here it is, a 1:14 scale model of my 14 foot AGP. The pool itself is 1 foot across. And yes, my liner really is camo patterned on the outside, in those exact garish green colors! I had...

    She's Closed For Winter

Welp, we closed the pool today. Just came off a SLAM a week ago, so we brought it up to SLAM level and added poly 60, circulated for an hour. DH moved ladder to the center of the pool, and tied the pillow to that and to the sides to anchor it. Installed the Gizzmo in the skimmer. I helped DH put...
