broken filters (i’m suspecting maintenance guy broke it..)

Last Thursday morning, we had a regular pool & fountain maintenance guy. We were thinking of switching the maintenance company because of how they charge us is so random & additionally charge us for frequent filter cleaning & adding more salt etc, which we didn’t experience with another company we used to hire for 1 year (they were charging us flat fee and didn’t tell us something got broke every month. I couldn’t check how this new company was charging us for past 1 year due to family emergency, so i was finally able to check recently for the first time and was shocked how they were charging us crazily. Our pool is far from house so they know we don’t have security cameras there (it’s behind the trees so no one can really see what he’s doing unless if we go there). So I felt like they’d break something this time when they come, and just like i predicted, maintenance guy showed us broken filter & plastic filter case. He said it’s because filter and case are too old.
but those look unnaturally broken to me. While I was distracted and went inside the house, he was taking those filters with him in his car. So i told him i didn’t give him permission to take our belongings with him. He said the pool company he works for might have replacement parts but our filters are not regular size, so it’s easier for him to take them with him, etc.

After that, he suddenly started to say “so you’re calling me a thief? i’m not going to work for you anymore!!” and he just left without putting filters back. I called his boss (owner of the company) right after his guy left in the AM, and he said he’d call me back and would come if it’s urgent, but he never called me back til evening, so i texted him but he said he’d just come next Monday which is today.. His guy left the controller “timeout mode”, so I asked the owner if it’s no problem to leave like that, and he said it’s no problem because it’d be automatically go back to auto after 3h. But yesterday when i checked, nothing was working and controller said “filter pump off”. and I noticed the fountain water was all drained. so i asked the owner if nothing would break because of those unusual settings (nothing has been working since last Thursday), and his guy never asked us if it’s ok to drain water from fountain, and water is super expensive (we receive crazy amount of water bill every month, and fountain water was clean so there’s no reason for his guy to drain…)

I wonder if anyone could prove that the filters don’t naturally break like that, and if we have to pay for those broken stuff every time they claim it broke naturally (or if there’s any ways to prevent other than setting security cameras, because wifi can’t reach etc), and if we can ask them to deduct the fountain water from this month invoice because we didn’t approve them to drain? videos and pictures are in the website (icloud photo sharing album)

Thank you so much in advance!!

Mom,

I assume you have DE filter that has several plastic and fabric grids.. I assumed wrong see below..

Grids should last a long time, but for them to break, when old, is not at all unusual. Basically the plastic just starts to disintegrate and becomes almost fragile.

When was the last time the grids were replaced??

I am not saying the pool guy was not trying to cheat you, but that would not be my first thought.

If you have the bad parts, show us some pics.

Thanks,

Jim R.

thanks Jim, if you could check out these photos and videos in this link iCloud Photo Sharing that’d be great! i’ll go check those things and will ask questions to the owner today!

i just went there to check again, and water was leaking everywhere from the tank that the maintenance guy left it without closing properly, and owner confirmed it’s no problem to leave it like that, so since last Thursday we might be wasting so much water whenever it was turned on (8 hours or 24h..?).

I added some pictures and videos to that link just now. Unfortunately i don’t know how old the filter is, but the filter & plastic parts look not fragile at all, there’s only one broken section. (i’m sorry it’s hard to describe verbally, i can take more pictures / videos)

the owner of pool maintenance company is coming soon so i’ll keep you posted, but if there are any suggestions what kind of questions i should be asking him, please let me know. thank you so much!!

Mom,

I "assumed" wrong... :(

You have a cartridge filter.. and a very small cartridge filter at that.

What color is your water?? I ask because if you have algae, it would overload that filter pretty quickly.

I am not familiar with that specific filter, so have no input on if the failure is due to the filter being very old, or being intentionally done by the pool guy.

But.. Plastic stuff, soaking in chlorinated pool water for a long period of time, could cause it to get soft. Does the broken center piece feel weak if you try to break off a little piece?

Even if the pool guy wants to quit, he can't just leave it the way it is.. You can't run the pump with the filter open like that.

Thanks,

Jim R.

Based off the drain plug it looks like it’s plumbed correctly. Is that your fountain filter? If he left the lid off, that’s why your fountain would drain and the video suggest the pump is running dry. Turn your fountain pump off and leave it off until it’s fixed. What’s the HP if the pump? What’s the size of that filter? It should have a label on the side of the lid.

It would be incredibly difficult to break that cartridge by hand, though I wanted to many times. Very frustrating filter to work on. Those filters were first made by American Pool Products (the Predator) years before before Pentair bought and re-labeled them. They always had an issue with the cartridge when the pressure would get and remain high, damage to the end caps as the cartridge would actually be crushed down and deform just as you see it.
That filter appears to be old and the damage could be just what happens to them. I always tried to reverse their installation when returning the cartridge to the tank (swap top for bottom), but don't know if it actually did any good.
Time Out mode is only 3 hours. Should be in Service Mode to stay off until a repair is made.
