Would you choose automation OR upgrade from a 1.5 hp pump to a 3+hp variable speed pump?

Recently moved into a home with a pool and spa that needs replaster/re-tile.... we're having the spa pump and and pool pump connected so it's one pump for a spa spillover...

Pool is gunite, 30x16 about 22,000 gallons, chlorine...

Given that you are going to use one pump for the spa and the pool, get the VS pump. A Pentair Intelliflo VS pump will allow you to easily add automation at a later date if you choose. Do not get a SVRS as it will only cause you frustration.

Thank you so much! That's the pump I was looking at. My PB, should we choose to get it from him, or charging $1500 OVER what I've found it for and then also charging $1500 to install..

I assume we are talking about an IntelliFlo 3 HP pump... If so, they are a great pump.. except the one with the SVRS option.. As Gene points out.. Do NOT buy any pump with the SVRS option.

I suggest that you find a pool builder that is willing to work with you.

Is the $1,500 dollars for just installing the pump or is it to reconfigure the plumbing from using two pumps to one pump?

Because you are only going to have the one pump, I would for sure go with the IntelliFlo... That said, after about a week of having to move valves between the pool mode and the spa mode, you will be wishing that you had also gotten the automation..

You need to absolutely make sure the pool builder uses Jandy (style) valves.. No ball valves allowed. This will allow you to automate later if you wish.

Thank you so much! I really appreciate your reply. I'll mention the jandy for sure. Our current PB is very communicative, which is great and a far cry from the previous 3 who just stop responding and never show up.... it's been a crazy ride!
