Filling up pool for the 1st time

Y
OK -- that is a normal loss of FC during a sunny day in summer. I assume you are not putting chlorine in the water at the same time with a SWCG or trichlor pucks.

yes, I have turned off the chlorine dispenser..... I am currently doing some experiment to check on the effect of the following scenarios to the pool chemicals:

1. sunlight on the pool (FC consumption)
2. swimmers in the pool (FC consumption)
3. dispenser/SWG setting and pump operation hr (FC production)
4. heavy downpour
5. anything else? ?

Feel like I am back to school chemistry class ?. Hope that with all the above information, I will be able to dial in on the setting of the chlorine dispenser/SWG and predict the changes in pool chemistry.....

What will happen to your pool chemistry if you add black ashes to your pool? ?

My pool is full of black ashes caused by a fire outbreak near by. I managed to scoop out those floating around on the surface and vacuumed those settled on the pool base. And for those ashes floating in the mid of the water, I guess I have to wait for it to settle to the base then only vacuum it.....

Not so sure you have to wait 48 hrs. 24 hours should be good enough, but definitely make sure you brush the salt around a couple times throughout the day to help it dissolve and mix with the water before turning on the SWG. Good luck!

Added salt yesterday evening.... this morning, found out that water become cloudy/brownish and with dirt at the pool base..... guess I will need to work really hard this weekend to vacuum the pool ?

I haves brushed the salt last night, so will brush the salt again this evening when I get back from work.

I have vacuumed the pool this morning before I got to work. I came back in the evening and found that there are some newly settled sediment on the pool floor. Now I am wondering whether I have bought a really low quality/dirty pool salt ?

We have seen that as well. I forget which salt it was though. So sad :( BUT it is an easy fix for the most part (says the one that is not doing the work)

Kim:kim:
I doubt that in Malaysia he is buying the same salt we get in the USA.

i suppose what I got here is of lower quality compare to what you have over there. There are no branding on the packaging, and only has the text “coarse salt” written on it.

My current CYA is 40, and I need to raise it to 70.

From PoolMath, 3kg Trichlor will raise:
1. CYA 30; hence achieve CYA 70
2. at the same time, pH drop 2.7

I am currently using soda ash to raise the pH whenever require. From PoolMath, to raise pH 2.7 in order to balance off the effect by trichlor, I need 5kg of soda ash. TA will raise by 87 also.

With current reading of TA 60, this will raise my total TA to 147, which will overshoot the recommended range of 60-80.

As I can’t get cyanuric acid and can only depend on Trichlor for cya, so the only thing I can do to raise ph without raising TA is to use aeration.

Any advice on the above?

Btw, does salt raise CH too? My CH raised from 40 to 60 after added 175kg of salt to my pool.

I think i am going to do these:
1. Turn off the trichlor chlorine dispenser
2. Activate my SWG at Medium setting; based on my record, daily FC consumption is about 2.5. From PoolMath, running my SWG at Medium (50%) setting for 10hrs will provide FC2.8.
3. Connect sprayer (as per attached photo) to the return.
4. Once the pH is raised, then can use trichlor again for the cya.

Hope the above will work....

Btw, running the SWG for 5hrs at MAX (100%) setting will give me FC2.8 too. On the electricity usage for the SWG, which will have a better saving? Medium setting running 10hrs or Max setting running 5hrs?

Salt should not raise CH. But with the quality salt you got maybe there was some CH in it.

Running your pump for 5 hours to get your needed chlorine will use less electricity then 10 hours.

Today, I run my SWG at MAX production rate for 10hrs and only managed to produce FC 3.5 (after taking into account of FC losses of 2.5), which is very much lower than the one indicate in PoolMath. My current salt lvl is 4000ppm, and from the SWG manual, I need salt at 5600 for optimum performance.

My question is, do salt lvl in pool water and pump flow rate have anything to do with the chlorine production?

For the pH, I am happy to report that I managed to raise the pH from 7.2 to 7.4 by running the pump for 12hrs with the sprayer connected to the return. I think I am going to install another sprayer to increase the aeration rate.
