The steel should be put in the hole to help secure the sides and give the plumbers something to tie the plumber into. Might want to check on that.

Go out and measure your hole. Add about 8" for steel, gunite, and plaster. It is deep, wide, long, etc enough?

Oh and where are our pictures??? LOL

Right now they are digging the trenches for the plumbing, once that's done they will be putting in the steel rebar and actual plumbing before the gunite stage.
I measured all the key dimensions (width, length and depth, all were about 12 inches bigger than the plan dimensions to allow for the gunite and plaster.

During the build, the digger guy asked if I want to really go down to 8 feet, since his back hoe was really having to reach deep to get the dirt out. My answer was, Yup, keep digging.
He wen't down to 9 feet in total to take into account the gunite and plaster, we had to reduce the shallow area a little to allow a smoother transition from 4 feet in the shallow end, but I'm happy to get the deep end at 8 feet when finished.

The guy's are back into today to hand trench down the side of the house for the piping that will go to the equipment pad, tomorrow they will be back with a trencher to dig out the main plumbing trenches. While they are at it they will also trench for new sprinkler pipes (saves me from doing it).
 
As already mentioned, consider carefully how you are going to chlorinate your pool. There are many options but only 2 that will actually work long term.
1) Liquid chlorine (i.e. bleach): pro - easy to get; con - requires nearly daily additions and lugging multiple gallons at a time.
2) SWG: pro - once dialed in requires minimum management; con - up front cost. With the automation system you have the Pentair IC-40 would be awesome!

Spend a little of your free time reading Pool School and ask as many questions as you like.

That's what I did. I wanted swcg but needed to keep costs under control. Once the pool is balanced you'll be able to guess how much bleach you need to add. I still test but it was always half a jug of 8.25% daily. I still want a swcg but if I need to test and adjust pH often (like I read) then I'll just stick with the bleach. Either way you need to spend 10 minutes per day checking the pool (chem levels, empty skimmer baskets). Good luck!

Agreed, I wanted a SWCG as well, but the costs (short term) were going to add to much to the initial costs.
 
The rebar team turned up really early at 7am this morning and set to work. They got all the rebar work done by about 3pm.

Spoke to the builder and with a little luck they will be shooting the gunite either Thursday or Friday next week. Fingers crossed :)

Thanks Kim, i'll take a look at the pics and see how i can embed them.

I'll be at home when they shoot the gunite for sure, I like to keep my eye on things as it progresses and of course take pics.

Sure, I just PM'ed you Marcus' cell number from Bi-County Pools, give him a call.
They are based in Yuba City, but I just texted him and he could do a pool in Sacramento.

He's easy to work with, great comms and uses local and reputable local contractors. I've personally seen a number of his pools and very happy with the quality of his work.

My access to our garden is great since we have a vacant building plot next door to us, and we just pulled down a fence panel.

Not sure how wide an access he needs, I looked up the width of a bob cat and the smallest is about 36 inches wide and go up from there, so I'm sure that they could figure something out to gain access.

Just got a call from my PB, we passed the Pre-Gunite Inspection (Yippee)

So the Gunite team will be coming in tomorrow at 7am to start the Gunite.

Can't wait.

Gunite guys arrived right on time at 7am on Friday. They worked very, very hard all day to get the gunite completed.

They put down the gunite as if it was an art form, shaping the gunite with floats, shaving here, building there, they have mad skills.

Pretty pleased with the results, moving on now to pull new sprinkler pipes, electrical conduit and low voltage landscaping cabling before the pool decking gets laid.
