14 years of pool stores and failure...

It will end up getting even more clear than what it appears to be in this latest deep end shot. I am so glad to hear your family is happy with it, and they will be even more amazed how easy this is after this summer progresses. And all without one problem you need to see the pool store for aside from needing more Chlorine. You all will really enjoy the new normal.

SLAM is over. Whew. OCLT was 1.0ppm. Everything is set up so the fam will only have to do minimal things to maintain over the next few days then I'll come back and post some current numbers and figure out what to tackle next.

Back from my trip and finally caught up things enough to post here.

So here are current numbers:

FC 7
CC 0
PH 7.6
TA 140
CH 525
CYA 45

Already added 21oz of liquid chlorine to bring the FC up closer to 8. Not 100% on the CYA level as it was dark out when I tested and obviously not the ideal lighting conditions for that test, I may re-do it next week however I do know I am somewhere just above or below 50 based on the previous test results combined with this one. Pool is looking great overall, need to do some brushing for the areas the cleaner didn't get but otherwise all seems well.

What's next? Should I get that TA more in the acceptable range?

Yea, you can start working on that. Be patient, it will take some time. In your situation, you can take it to 7.0 each time if you want. Not more, but if you go there it's not a big deal. You aren't worried too much about your plaster, and it's not that big a threat. Plus, it should bounce back pretty quickly and then it's time to add acid again.

I am glad to hear it is going good.

How is the PH doing? Does it hold steady for the most part over a weeks time? Does it spike up every few days or so? The answers to these ? will tell me what you should do to your TA.

Every pool is so different. We will set your numbers where YOUR pool likes them.

So, I've only done two PH tests so far, yesterday and the day before. Both were steady at 7.6 I don't really have a big enough sample size to say if its spiking or not yet. Should I wait to determine this before working on taking it down?

Also, side question. Acid in my pool shed is at least a year old if not two (I've really never added acid more than once or twice, ever). Does it have a shelf life or some sort?

Lets wait two weeks to see what your PH does over that time. If your PH is staying steady at 7.6 then we will not touch your TA. They go hand in hand. TA is the last thing we adjust and then only when PH says we should.

M. acid does not have a shelf life. Is your pool shed well ventilated? Do you also store your chlorine/bleach in there? M.A. and chlorine do not play well together. The fumes can mix and make a nasty gas/fumes. Quite a few people keep their m.a. outside where kids and critters cannot get to it. Just want to give you a heads up.

Also, the fumes from MA are corrosive to metal. I have wire shelving where the previous owner kept the MA that has seen much better days. MA now has its own plastic deck box somewhat away from the pool

Oh, thats really good to know. My liquid chlorine stays in its own space on the back patio (shaded), but I was contemplating moving it to the pool shed. Guess I'll have to relocate the MA first.

I'll watch the PH for the next 2 weeks and see what happens and keep you guys posted.

Thanks!

You can wait and watch it, but it will be a little surprising if you don't start seeing pH rise with 140 TA. Personally, I would want a little more window with scaling potential. With 500+ CH, and high TA, you just don't want a high pH excursion for too long. Not ringning alarm bells, but just be aware, and watch for the pH to drift upward. Its really odd it hasn't already.

Being repetitive, but Acid has indefinite shelf life. Be aware, it does vent from bottles, and it will corrode things stored nearby.

First and foremost. What in the name of all things have you people done to my pool!!!!!!!!!!

Its...
Its....
Its.....
FANTASTIC!!!

Second, Patrick you called it. I started doing daily tests and watching PH, it started drifting upwards after about 3 days and hit 8.0. I've added acid twice since then to knock it down but just yesterday found the "How to Lower TA" post and the relative entry in Pool School, and I'm going to begin that process today. I'll bring some numbers and results back here tonight or tomorrow.

As of last night I'm sitting at:
FC 6 (before adding 64oz 12.5%)
CC 0
PH 7.5
TA 140
CH 525
CYA 45

So back to my original point, things have only gotten better since my last post. What I once thought was 'gin clear' most certainly wasn't anything of the sort. It really has been relatively effortless just making sure to do the daily basics and brush/spot vac when needed aside from the MX8.
Totally impressed.

Once this TA is under control, I guess I need to figure out what (if anything) I can do about the discoloration in the plaster or if I'm stuck with that until pool makeover time.

Side note: How do you resist the urge to rescue every person you see in the LPS? I was in there getting chlorine, and in another one getting a part for my cleaner (dropped it, woops). In second unnamed shop I kept hearing phosphates this, <redacted> weekly that....I really just wanted to rescue these people and say, "Here, let me show you the light." LOL

Ever considered offering very basic business cards for supporters that just have the TFP logo and URL on them for people to carefully slip to other victims in the LPS?

What does the light look like? I think it looks something like this. You guys are awesome.

Q1: Stay out of the pool store.
Q2: TFP Business Cards

And yes, we are awesome.

You could always stick around and start answering instead of asking. This forum's going to explode any day now with people stuck on the pool store merry-go-round and you know how to get off it.

Thanks for the link, and I completely intended on sticking around and helping out! Will have a supporter badge here shortly, never mind the money already saved, its about knowledge. Priceless.

Numb!

Your post made my day man. I am so glad to see this happen for you. The pool looks smashing indeed. That is what you are after, and it is all about the knowledge yea? Nothing to this stuff in most cases, and I couldn't be happier for you. I was about to call it quits, but think I will have one more nightcap in honor of that Gin clear water. Bravo Sir, fantastic work.
