I got home from work just in time to help Mike pull electrical. So now that's done...3 lengths of 125' 4 gauge and 1 - 125' length of 8 gauge copper wire

Today we coated the bondbeam with super blockade. One more coat and then it's on to thinset then coping!
Mike pressure washed the bond beam before we "painted" on the super blockade.

I'll be doing my coping soon, what was the point of the super blockade and where did you buy it?
The super blockade is for a moisture barrier. It prevents water from getting between the gunite and the tile thin set. We bought it at our local building supply.

I'm officially DIY jealous. i Just finished underground electric, and have inspections tomorrow (Friday 5-5) but I feel you all are killing me :|
I do have coping questions: when I pass underground electric and plumbing in about 7 hours, I'm on to decking. I would like to pick your brain on coping.
You used Super Blockade for water proofing, go it. You just filled my Saturday.........
What did you use for the mortar? Typical stone thinset? something special for outside?
You questions the grout in several post, what did you find was the best solution fro grout? (we are using a Travertine coping)

I couldn't see anything in the super blockade specs for tile over the material. How does it handle thinset? I like the fact that it stops effervescence but I'm concerned how the thinset and plaster will adhere. Any info on that?
I would imagine it wouldn't be in their spec sheet but in the thinset's on what substrates it can be applied to. Super blockade is a Portland cement based product so thinset won't have any adherence issues.

I've never installed travertine on a pool so maybe you do something different than what we did? The concrete coping stones we used needed to be applied on a mortar bed sandwiched between thinset. So the application went something like this: thinset on to bondbeam then spread in one direction with a 1/4" trowel; mortar dropped on top of wet thinset; butter back of stone with 1/4" trowel and thinset (don't applied to the overhang just where it meets the bondbeam) place stone on top of wet mortar/thinset and check for level adjusting with a rubber mallet and downward pressure.

this is interesting. i was on their website. is this available anywhere or is it just a somewhat local california company. i just contacted one of my local concrete supply houses where i bought my concrete sealer when i built my home. they are going to get back to me.
is this common practice with installs of concrete pools? thesis the first i'm reading about it on someones build and i'm really interested in using it.
do you know if it issue for use on gunite also? i realize they are similar but gunite and shotcrete are diff. do you have to watch what type of thinset you use for the tile then?

That detail is from a company called Pacific Stone. They are in Southern California. They make prefab coping and that is their recommended install.
it's a regional product. Merlex is located in Orange County and services the western side of the United States...although their website says they would be willing to send anywhere I imagine that would only be to wholesalers and large quantities.
Maybe because it's a regional product? I've seen it in other people's pictures...
Always read the spec sheets you plan to use and make sure they work with the type of tile you are using and the substrate and the application.
