First of all many thanks for all the useful insights in this forum and it has been a great help to me to manage the pool. We have an old pool that in the house we bought and learning how to manage. I am upgrading the pool pump to an energy efficient variable speed and also replacing some of the old diverter valves (broken handles, broken lube, ..). I noticed that inside the 3 port diverter valve there is some plastic hose between the main drain & skimmer -- sort of like prevent using either one exclusively for safety. Wanted to check what this exactly is meant for and if I should use same set-up in my new diverter valve. Please find the pictures where I have high-lighted the part in question. Thanks!

Most likely, it got sucked into the skimmer line or the main drain line.

Is the main drain cover on?

Thanks a lot @Jimrahbe and @JamesW. Did not know that the main drain can suck the Polaris tail -- looks like this may have happened a while back as I do have an Old Polaris with tail in tact.

Not sure if the Main drain cover is ON -- there is a bunch of leaf debris that never goes away, and this is on the deepest end of the pool (so staying away for it). Given this finding my guess is that there is more blockage there.

I also noticed some sub-standard plumbing and wanted to check if it is okay to leave for now or a must fix.

1) No hub coupling (rubber with shield), not really rated for pressurized applications. Fixing this will be more involved as it looks like not much space. However, looks like this has been like this forever -- wondering if it is okay since it is on the inlet. Union would have been ideal and may be we can fix this when we drain the pool for re-surfacing.

2) Don't have a straight run before 90 degree elbow -- Pentair IntelliFlo3 VSF 1.5 HP pump (the one I am going to replace) asks for 10" straight run for proper priming.

Please see attached picture showing the issues. Once again thanks a lot for your kind help. This forum is great.

That's actually a mission clamp, very similar to a no-hub, but rated for pressure. The stainless band is much thicker than a no-hub. There is no pressure in a suction line.

If you can get more pipe in front of the new pump, that would be great. But, there are thousands of pumps in use that don't have the 10" of straight pipe that still work well.

Guessing that your equipment is below water level. If possible, remove the red-handled ball valve and replace it with a 2-way Jandy-type valve.

Thanks a lot @1poolman1. You are correct -- equipment is below water level. How did you guess that? From the Valve? I am planning to do exactly what you suggested, replace the red ball valve with Jandy 2 port, also replace the old 3 port. I can use the same Mission clamp for both sides. That way it will be good. Thanks!
