Vacuuming during SLAM

Welcome to the forum!
If you have large amounts of solid organic material on the pool bottom, then vacuuming to waste at the start may be advisable. But once you are simply dealing with dead algae from maintaining your SLAM level FC, then vac through the filter is better so you are not having to add so much fresh water.
Be sure to read the SLAM Process
I suggest you read ABC's of Pool Water Chemistry.

Hey AGP and Welcome !! You didn’t give us a lot to go on but I’m guessing from the username it’s above ground ? How bad is the water ? Did it go green on your watch or did you buy a house where the pool sat for 3 years and became a swamp ? If there is gunk/debris on the bottom you can sweep it to a general area and get a lot more of it vac to waste before you have to add more water. The stuff on the bottom poofs up but you can let it settle and take a few passes with the brush to get most of it to one area. If it’s just the water with no sediment than use the filter like Marty advised.
