Vaccuuming with cartridge filter

Apologies if this is a dumb question........if you have a cartridge filter, do you vaccuum with the cartridge in place or remove it to do your vaccuuming? I don't have a "vaccuum to waste" setting but I do have a "leaf catcher" attachment for my vaccuum hose.

You vacuum with the cartridge in place.

If you took the cartridge out, everything would go directly back in to the pool.

Also if you have a drain setting, it should drain the pool before it hits the filter so it basically doubles as a vaccuum to waste. It drains alot though so you either need to be quick, or replace the lost water. I only use mine that way if i have a bunch of sand that i swept into one area so its quick and never hits the filter.
