Startup plaster and chemicals

With new plaster you want to close as late as possible so that you can keep lowering your pH.

The plaster curing with the pool closed can cause the pH to get very high and cause scale to accumulate on pool surfaces.

My closing in NJ is scheduled for October 19. That should be right before the leaves begin dropping. If I keep my pool open longer the leaves are a mess to clean up and their tannins can stin the pool surfaces.

So I suggest you look to close in mid October. That is about the latest you can push it in our area.
Oh alright, that’s longer than we expected. We have a heater, so that will help keep it swimmable. What month would be normal for opening?

Well you can see how much you are willing to pay for NG to keep the pool swimable as the nights get colder. And you will have a lot of evaporation with a warm pool on cold nights unless you have a cover.

I stop heating the pool towards the end of September and we use the spa until closing.

I open my pool around April 15th. Once all the snow has melted and when we are past freezing nights. I like opening early to see what needs repairs and to use the spa.
