Small Pool Build - Brisbane, Australia [emoji1037]

I was looking at that silver too. Am leaning toward the Manhattan because I can see the result and like it. I haven’t opened the pallets yet, but really keen to put the nasty pavers out of sight of the timers [emoji23] Waterline tiles going in either Friday or Monday. I hope this means that coping and paving is either Monday or Tuesday as I’ll be home to supervise!

Well, as much as the concrete shell has been more pleasing to the eye than the half dead grass that was its predecessor, I’m starting to get annoyed after almost 6 weeks of no action. Not my pb’s fault as it has rained almost everyday for the past 2 weeks. Tomorrow is meant to be plumbing (but so was today). Fingers crossed we finally have some action.

Quick question, what are the valves I want to see go in? I hear talk about making the sure valves (I think it’s the valves) that should be of high quality. Not sure if we will have the same names here in Australia. If not, what colour should I look out for and what is a red flag for poor quality?

Jandy Neverlube are really nice valves. Same here as America.

Don't accept simple ball valves if possible. They're white plastic with usually red handles or sometimes blue. If they're never in sun, they last OK, but the opening inside them is small, and they can be very stiff to turn. If subject to sunshine, they can seize right up. I have one on my backwash line, protected from sun by the filter box, and the small opening in it is not a cost factor because it's used so little. You shouldn't be needing very many valves, so hopefully not an issue for your PB.

2" pipe vs. 1.5" pipe... Best to do it all in 50 mm pipe, not 40 mm... just in case that comes up.

Thanks! Will be home tomorrow so fingers crossed it goes ahead as planned, so I can see what goes in. I might need to post a pic for confirmation.

I had the discussion at contract signing re:diameter. Apparently it’s one size in and one size out. I can’t recall which he said was which now. Would have preferred 50mm all around but this was one battle I let him win... old school pool builder. I’m assuming that can’t be changed now anyway since all the plumbing rough in is done and covered with concrete?

That’s good to know. Yes, weather has been so unpredictable. On a positive the heat pump company I’ve been dealing with failed to return my last email, some 6 weeks ago. They were very apologetic and are coming at 7.30am to do a site visit. Can’t ask for more than that. Hoping our proposed area near where the pool equipment is going will be adequate. If the plumber is here, then they can at least chat about the specifics. Could work out well.

It would be Kim! The heat pump company doesn’t want to install until there’s water in the pool but a site visit is included to ensure the location is ok etc. would be great if he could tell the plumber exactly where he wants the heat pump provision piping to end to make his life easier for connection. I’m really hoping the area my hubby has prepared is suitable for both th equipment and heat pump. We’re a bit stuffed if it’s not. Just started raining... again [emoji31]

Bucketing down here. Heat pump guy came and said the unit will fit in our area... just. Plumber called and isn’t starting until tomorrow. He did come by for a site visit. He was here for over an hour. Talk of having to bend pipes with heat etc due to the curves he needs to navigate. He wants us to loose the strip drain and put in a French drain on that side. That will save us a ton of money as hubby will do that along with the other 3 sides, he’d already planned to do. There was a lot of discussion about what the best plan would be. We will just discharge the backwash manually to a drain nearby as it’s too complex to hard plumb for the amount of use it will get. Overall happy with the outcome, despite feeling very overwhelmed when he was here. Our pb plumber only does so much. Anything beyond that we need to get our own plumber in for... which we don’t have. The end result means he will be able to do it all. Not that we would have minded getting someone else in, if need be. He said the valves he uses aren’t cheap ball valves. Apparently same cost as the neverlubes. He said they weren’t necessary unless you are automating. Anyway, will leave that be. Was kind of expecting plumbing to be stressful. I think after this things should be fairly straightforward.

Test kit arrived today! Wondering which neighbour to hit up first for a sample of pool water!

I remember looking up the discharge standards and bumped into QLD's, which made a lot of sense to me (might have changed). The standards I saw were backwash to sewer, and pool overflow to roof water drains. A way to solve it is just keep quiet (don't know what conditions you're building under) or get a letter from the PB saying it's OK to plumb backwash to roof drains. Here in Sydney, both are supposed to go to sewer. I think it's worth your while holding PB to task if you're covered by regulations, but also hopeful you're outside a regulated area, because it's probably all a bit overdone.

(the air gap outlet is allowed to be over the sewer gully, so a licensed plumber is not required)

By the sounds of all that rain, I hope you have an overflow!

Liz! I know you are happy the heater can go there!!! Yea!

LOL of feeling overloaded after the meeting. I hope you had a pad of paper to write notes on as I am sure your brain forgot about half of what he said. That is how I am with stuff like that. There is a only so much info I can take in and hold at any one time.

Drain-make sure you watch your rain water runoff patterns and make the best decision to keep the house dry and pool from overflowing. Saving money now to spend it on clean up later=not so much fun :(

Yes, very happy re equipment pad. Hubby had to make some late night adjustments to put the end caps on the besa bricks and bring the level of paving base up so there’s an extra 20cm of width just in case. Nothing like an 8pm dash to the hardware store and project.

Funnily enough we had the heaviest rain we’ve probably had in 10 years today. I don’t know if it’s on your news but North Queensland has had terrible flooding with cyclone Nora and we seems to have copped some sort of remnants. It was crazy. All the trenches are already dug and the water flowed beautifully given we got 50mm in under an hour, plus rain either side of that deluge. It did briefly overflow to cover the path and patio but it dissipated quickly and wasn’t anywhere near the level it use to get beforehand. Putting the pool in has actually solved a lot of our previous drainage issues as the yard was sloped towards the house. Now it’s level with a massive slab of concrete, the water has no choice but to follow the path we want it to.

I hear you on the  late night runs to get things done! Been there, done that and am sure will happen again! LOL

SOOOO happy to hear the pool is solving problems from before! A major win!! AND you get a pool out of it! SCORE!
