SLAMming Confused: Deal w CYA First? What is “SLAM Level”?

Thanks. Would be helpful for the developer to add the particular measurement they're referring to there...
Yeah, TFP is a 503c non-profit. All of us folks that help out are volunteers. I know we have a long list of inconsistencies, and upgrades on the list...and we all would like to see them all addressed. Keeping the lights on is the first priority. The only funding really is through pool math subscriptions, donations (see link below) and the occasional fund drive. We do the best we can!

You should post your suggestions to the Pool Math Forum!

Will do.

I just did a quick chlorine/ph test before running a couple of errands. Both look high.

Thoughts? Thanks!

Any advice? Still just wait til this evening to check cya?
Go ahead and test, only downside is the cost of a bit of reagent. If your result is near what you expected, you are probably good to go (assuming you left pump running and threw in the dolphin).

Look forward to the results!!!

Ph looks a little high to me relative to what’s stipulated in the SLAM document. No worries there?
Let's get that pH down. You will note in pool math, when you use effects of adding and use muriatic acid for chemical, there is a note at the bottom. The pH adjustments are relatively accurate when you reduce pH by .4. Larger additions may not be accurate.

Let's follow the SLAM process to a T and get this pool up and running.

Use pool math and reduce your pH by .4 with Muriatic. Pump running. Test again after 30 minutes. Repeat until your pH is 7.2-7.4. Then we SLAM!

For future reference, pour the solution to each one of the lines and then read result. You can't read CYA results between the lines, the scale is logarithmic. For your purposes, your CYA is 50 (always round up).

Just logged test and added 3.75 quarts of chlorine. I’m also running the robot vac.

Other than cleaning the robot filter and waiting an hour to testing again is there anything else I should be doing?

I tried using our Pool Blaster but it’s just sucking in the algae and spitting it right back out, so I stopped.

Should I sweep the algae from the shallow end to the deep end? Anything else?

Visually, the pool is worse now than last night, as I can no longer see the bottom.

Thanks.

Brush and scrub everything. Liner, skimmer, behind any lights, in the weir door foam. Be an algae detective. See something scrub something. Scrubbing and brushing constantly breaks the algae biofilm and let's the chlorine kill the algae. Do you have a ladder? Don't see one in your media.

You are killing stuff. What type of filter do you have (not in your signature). If sand, watch the pressure. when it rises 25% over clean pressure backwash. If DE or Cartridge, then you need the clean them when pressure rises 25%, unless you have a backwash on the DE filter, you should backwash and recharge.

Do you have a vacuum?

We don't have a ladder.

We have a sand filter. Pressure is nominally between 10 and 15. Has remained constant throughout the day. I had been adding DE to the filter in small increments during my first attempt to open the pool last week. I've not done that this time.

We have three vacuums:
  • The robot vac
  • The pool blaster
  • The standard pool vacuum that uses the pump for suction
Thanks.

The weir door is in the skimmer. The flappy thing. It has foam to make it float/flappy. check it for algae

cool

You can use the standard vacuum to vacuum dead off the bottom.

Thank you.

When you say standard vacuum, is that vacuuming to waste, or vacuuming to and through the filter?

I appreciate your help.

Sticking with the program.

I was pretty down last night bc I’m simply not seeing visible results, though the FC is very close to the 20ppm indicated for SLAM.

Can’t see bottom of the deep end at all, nor the shallow end clearly. Continuing to vac, sweep and run the robot.

Is there a point in this process where I can expect to see that things are improving?

Thanks.
