Shaft seal brand? Lube teflon vs silicon?

yes, that's the one of the cheapest ones I mentioned in my post. It's even cheaper than INYOPools PS-3890.
The one I placed an order for was about $10 cheaper, $16.85 with free shipping and no tax. There are other sites which sell U.S. Seal model for under $20 shipped.

INYOPools also had a more expensive one and I wonder what the difference is.

Also, their reply to some customer is a little strange - they point customer to a cheaper version (I noticed some of their replies were not accurate and brought it to their attention. They also recommend 3890 over 4280, because 4280 is for "salt pools" :) )

Is a viton seal the one you want to use with a salt system? Thank you,

Actually, you will want to use the heavy-duty shaft seal, and if you have the Hayward Tristar pump series that would be part number 5250-250 that you can view by clicking here.

It looks like there are two different seals based on the age of the pump.

Thanks, I know. Mine shoud be PS-4280, because the one that was installed in 2015 is SPX3200SA.

PS-4280 is the one I purchased on Friday, but order got canceled for some reason.
I see seals for jandy pumps on ebay, which I'd expect to be PS-4820 based on U.S. Seal mfg catalog (attached), but seller says they are PS-3890. How can that be? May be other brands suggest PS-3890 or maybe seller decides what to offer ?

O-Ring Seal Rebuild Kit For Polaris Booster Pump PB4-60 3/4 hp 2012-Current | eBay

By the way inyopools told me I should go with PS-3890, because PS-4280 is for saltwater.. I guess many people in pool industry don't have expirience and don't have pools

thanks

P.S. This is the email I got from inyopools - Vilton PS-3890. Is this another mistake?

The PS-4280 is a good seal and I would use that.

The PS-1907 is the best possible seal and the best choice if you can find one at a good price.

The Northstar pump is junk and it's usually best to replace it rather than keep putting money into it.

This pump is over 15 years old and bad shaft seal (twice) and bad capacitor are the only issues I've had so far. 2nd shaft seal only leaked for a few hours during 5 or so openings, it was my mistake not replacing it before motor became very loud because of bad bearings. If I can get it running for a few more years for under $200 I think it's well worth it.
Thanks.

Example, not a recommendation of the site selling the seal as I am not sure if they are a reliable store or not.
I'm not sure I understand what it is - It mensionts PS-3890 and PS-1907.
Thanks.

Seems like inyopools and Liberty brand advertise their PS-3890 as Viton Seal

Pump Shaft Seal, 5/8", Viton - PS-3890

PS-3890V VITON Seal

Is liberty just as good as U.S. Seal? They have very good package prices on ebay - a 3-4 O-Rings + PS-4280 or PS-3890V VITON Seal for under $25-30 shipped.
They don't have seals for my pump as a package, but they can probably make one. I just wonder if quality of Liberty is on par with U.S. Seal.

thanks

P.S. I got a reply from the seller, not sure how accurate it is -
The PS-3890V is the same as a PS-4280 except that the PS-4280 has a carbon seat as opposed to the ceramic on the PS-3890. Is carboan seat better than ceramic?

PPS I placed an online order for Liberty shaft seal PS-4280 and o-rings.
Then I contacted Liberty Pool Products Liberty and they confirmed their PS-3890 is Viton (they call it PS-3890V). They said the difference between their PS-3890V and PS-4280 is the spring. They recommended PS-
3890V, only because they sell them 1000 to 1 and they had 0 issues with it. I don't know why the spring is different and I hope I made the right choice going with Liberty PS-4280.
The manufacturer didn't mention anything about carbon seat vs ceramic seat.

For some reason they don't have PS-3890V listed on their site, but they have very good prices, not sure about the quality.

I recieved the package with shaft seal (bottom) and o-rings. Can anyone tell me if the sealed shaft seal looks like 4280?
it has less rubber on it than the other 2, which are SPX3200SA (PS-3890)

thanks

The one on the right is the new one.

i'm looking online and it seems like 4280 has green dot on it (2nd picture. ozone?). Mine has it (picture from prevous post, needs to be maximized to see (on the left)) Is that the indicator I could go by?

thanks

The US Seal should say John Crane, which is the company that owns the US Seal line.

View attachment 407468
I know, I have those, they all say Crane and some numbers like 5/8 and additional letters and numbers like 49 on one, CPA025 114 0160-1 on the 2nd one, the 3rd one has number 43. not sure what all those numbers are for.
2 were used, 3rd one came with impeller, but decided not to use it

I already installed the new shaft seal, new o-ring, but now having issues putting it back into housing. I think I do everything right, siliconed rubber gasket and plastic parts incluing lock ring, but can't get it in all the way. Defusser is not touching the housing yet, so I guess I need push harder to force it in? is it supposed to be this dificult? This is Hayward Northstar.

thanks

What is the serial number for the pump?

When was the pump made?

In my opinion, Liberty Seals are not the same quality as US Seals.

In my opinion, it's inappropriate for Liberty to use the same part numbers as US Seals because it causes confusion as to the source of the seal.

In my opinion, the part number PS-4280 is a trademark of US Seal.
