Mounting pool light
20211117_084338.jpg

New eyeballs and main drain cover installed. Second coat of deck stain applied. They're done. :kim:

Today was dreary, so will take pics tomorrow when I start to fill pool. (y)

Does the work at good up close as it does in the pics??
The only thing that could have been better was matching the pool deck texture. Should have been a much heavier/thicker knock-down, but really didn't show up until after the stain was applied. But is 1000x better than it was. So yes, except for that, I'm thrilled. :)

It’s cool watching those guys work. I was fascinated when they replaced our old brick coping with stone. He would look at it for a minute and then go cut/chip a rock and fit it in like he measured it.
Masonry is a true art form. I was riveted watching them put the rock veneer on the house several years ago.

Need to clean before starting to fill

Good thing I thought of a rope before getting in. The ramp to the deep end was ... a fiberglass slide. Hubby had left for a dr appt, so without the rope, I'd have been stuck until he returned.

Not a view you see everyday :sneaky:

Good view of the pool texture

Since my instructions were for continuous fill, went ahead and followed hose sock + bottle method used for plaster pools. Probably not needed here, but can't hurt.

Ready, set, go!

See what I mean about texture difference on the pool deck? You definitely can see the patches. Will have to decide if I can live with it as is.

Hopefully this excursion can answer someone's future questions about what is involved with a fiberglass pool refinish. (y)

You probably could have reached the ladder and climbed out.
Nope. Slippery sloped sides + pool depth = couldn't reach. The pool is 8-1/2 ft deep. I'd be in for the duration ... or at least until hubby got hungry. :ROFLMAO:

Pool filled, took about 35 hr. Now to the chem stuff. Couldn't find liquid Stabilizer, so forced to use granular. Man do I hate that forever-to-dissolve stuff. :pth:

Cleaned new skimmer for the first time. Old one had a solid floating inner ring that kept the leaves in the basket when the pump was off. This one is a Hayward Auto-Skim with a weir door. When the pump is turned off, the weir keeps the leaves from going back into the pool, but half the leaves don't stay in the basket for easy removal. Is there a technique that I'm missing? Kneeling down to that level is not something I can physically do at times and I sure as heck don't want to be reaching into cold water for cleaning.

That might keep the basket in place, but I don't see how that keeps the leaves in the basket - they float and the skimmer "cavity" is much larger than the diameter of the basket so lifting the basket leaves half of the accumlated leaves behind including those hiding behind the weir door.

I'm not sure what your skimmer is like on the inside - but if it has a basket with a bar across the top of it ....... I bought one of these long-handled things where one end hooks onto the bar that goes across the top of the skimmer basket - no bending. On the other end is a little hook so you can pick the skimmer cover up and put it back on without having to bend down to do that either. What I like about this separate skimmer puller over the ones that actually attach and stay inside the skimmer basket is that you totally avoid grabbing a spider or bug with this one! So no bending at all and no bugs - win/win :)
The trick to getting all the floating stuff in the basket is to hook the puller on the skimmer basket handle, then as you are pulling it up, spin it gently and everything gets pulled into the middle so as you continue to pull the basket out, all the debris is caught in it.

Pull the basket with the pump on low so that the leaves don't try to back out.

Also, have a spare clean basket to pop in immediately when you pull the dirty basket.

Dump the basket before it gets jammed full of leaves.
