Refurb - Sachse Tx w/ Bi-Carb Startup

Re: Refurb - Sachse, Tx

No need to drain the pool but don't add any more CYA. There is nothing wrong with having a high CYA level and it will provide more protection from the sun, it just means that you'll need to maintain a higher FC level to compensate.

Re: Refurb - Sachse, Tx

Good morning all and happy August. The dog days of summer are setting in.

Day 13

6:30 AM Readings

FC 2.5 - Added 92 oz 12.5% liquid bleach targeting FC of 10 (wondering if I had a measurement error last night as I lost .5 FC overnight)
pH 8.0 - Added 7.5oz MA targeting pH of 7.8
TA - 140

Thinking about the CYA readings last night. If 10 tabs caused my CYA to rise 25 or more in just two weeks, how the heck are people using tabs keeping their pools algae free?

Re: Refurb - Sachse, Tx

Day 13
7:00 PM Readings

FC 4.5 - Added 55 oz 12.5% liquid bleach targeting FC of 9 - I think maybe my chlorine has lost some umph as it was not sunny today and I targeted FC of 9 this morning. I will retest a bit later this evening and ensure I am up to at least 9. Dear wife picked up some relatively fresh (17 054) from Lowes today. We are also making room inside the house for unopened bottles to preserve the strength as much as possible. Opened bottle stays in garage.

pH 8.0 - Added 7.5oz MA targeting pH of 7.8
TA - 140
CYA - I remeasured this evening and have 50-60 (wife confirmed). I am going to assume 60 for now. Sure do use alot of R-0013 on that test.... Happy my kit provides two bottles. I will not remeasure until post vacation (after using tabs for 2+ weeks). UGH! Hopefully we get some rain and have decent evaporation enabling some new water in. I will set the irrigation circuit dedicated to pool fill to run approx 5 minutes every morning during vacation to keep her topped off.

Pool is crystal clear. During the week I don't get to see the pool with sun (darn work). But it is very noticable the color is becoming a royal blue without direct sun light. When we started it was a black/green hue. Dear wife wanted a lagoon look and she has it. Also at night the single 500W pool light is brighter and brighter. After about day 2, I was severely dissapointed as the light barely lit the back wall. Now it is much much brighter. I am anxious to see the transformation over the next few weeks.

Brian,
When do you think is the point to start driving down the TA?

Re: Refurb - Sachse, Tx

Day 13
9:45 PM Readings

FC 8.0 - Sure enough the older bleach had lost some of it's strength. When I added at 7:00 tonight, 1/2 was older and 1/2 was newer. Will add 12oz 12.5% liquid bleach targeting FC of 9

Re: Refurb - Sachse, Tx

You can also pick up bleach at the grocery store, just make sure it's regular bleach and not splash-less. When I need it, I usually buy the store brand if it's the cheapest and freshest.

Thanks for the reminder Marla. What is the typical strength % of store bought chlorine, 8.25%? It may prove a better deal if it is fresher even if it is only 8.25% vs 12.5%. Trying to save storage space may not be prudent if the 12.5% is not fresh.

Re: Refurb - Sachse, Tx

As we know the testing of CYA is difficult at best. I went back to PoolMath and calculated the amount of CYA the 12 tabs of trichlor added over the past 2 weeks - raised CYA by 33. The addition of 4lbs of stabilizer raised CYA 40 (too much). So simple math equation says 33 + 40 = 73 CYA.

It is clear that the preference would be to not add any further tabs to the water as it is nearly perfect for SWG that is coming post vacation.

My quandary is what to do during vacation (2+ wks)? Do I raise the FC level to shock level (28) right before leaving and have someone (if possible) add a pre-calculated amount of bleach at the end of the first week? I have been losing ~3ppm/ day but will have a better view now that the tabs are off and CYA is mixed well. 7days x 3ppm = 21ppm loss in one week. Shock level @70CYA = 28. 28-21 will just keep me under minimum of 5. Admittedly, I am a little concerned with this approach as I do not want to harm my fresh plaster.

The only other option I can come up with is use the tabs and plan to replace some water after vacation. This may prove the simplest but will require getting everything back in balance before adding SWG.

Brian I know you said the higher CYA won't hurt and I don't need to replace water but I would guess another 12 tabs through vacation would result in CYA of 106 (73 + 33).

I am open to suggestions and thoughts.

Re: Refurb - Sachse, Tx

Today's eye candy - at least for me it is.....

We need to replace the overflow drain cover (currently white and very brittle). Wife and I are trying to decide between gray and black. Opinions officially solicited

Re: Refurb - Sachse, Tx

Day 14
6:30 PM Readings

FC 5.5 - lost 3.5ppm on a cloudy day (with a small amount of rain). Added 55oz 12.5% bleach targeting FC of 10 to stay above minimum recommended 6
CC >0 <.5
pH 8.0 - Added 7oz MA targeting 7.8
TA 130 - looking at a plot of TA, I predict we are ~6-7 days from hitting 100. The decline is lessening due to reduced amount of MA needed to adjust pH.
Temp 80 - big drop due to clouds and cool air!

Hey Brian,
I am still running my pump 24x7. Should I keep this up or reduce to 8-12 hours?

Re: Refurb - Sachse, Tx

Hi Kim!
Those are really nice. Might have to look into them as ours are still original and they look so much better.
However, I was asking about pool overflow drain cover - white rectangle and tile level at far end of pool in last picture.
