Re-plaster on new pool

Hi! I have a new Anthony & Sylvan pool that was completed 7/2018. I’m enclosing pics of the issue we had. Long story short, they are re-plastering our pool next week by saw cutting under the tile and chipping away SOME of the plaster. They then will add a bonding agent to the existing plaster and plaster over that.
Is this a good way to fix this?
I thought that the whole pool should be removed of old plaster.

It is not unusual for a replaster to not be a full chip-out. You can do that once but the next time will need to be a full chip-out. Kind of like roofing over asphalt shingles. If in good shape, you can have two layers.

They will chip out a the tile line and around fittings to the new plaster will be flush. It is not ideal as you are not in the same position you would have been if they had done it all right the first time. But what they are doing is an acceptable replaster technique.
 
Why are they replastering?

You had a thread going about purple water.
 
Yes I did. The first picture you can see when they were originally plastering they had to scoop out around the hydrostatic valve. The second picture shows how they fixed that divot. After they patched that area and they refilled my pool, I cleared up the water. That was Saturday. That was when we were able to see their patch job. Then we ran the vacuum and minutes later my water turned purple. When I posted about the purple water A&S hadn’t told us that they were gonna replaster to fix the patch.
I hope I summed it up for you.
 
With the replaster you will get rid of the copper in your water. That is a good thing. Think twice about adding it back in over time with the mineral cartridge.

Take this with a grain of salt because I am only repeating what I have heard from pool builders.

Basically, if a chipout is done and plaster applied (or the very first plaster) and maintain the pool well, the plaster layer will last 15-20 years. After that, instead of chipping out and replastering, one can do scrub/sand of the remainder, apply a bonding agent and apply the plaster layer. That pool is then on its second life lasting another 7-10 years.

If the above is true, it will mean that your pool is on the second lifespan already. As I said, take this with a grain of salt as I could be wrong. Some experts in the forum may be able to comment on this.

Correct. To be clear, in that other thread with Marty you were missing his point. He directed you to an article that asked about using mineral cartridges. You replied that you hadn’t used them, but you had. And that is how the copper got in your pool.

So, no, don’t put a cartridge in your Nature 2. It adds copper which is why your water turned purple. It was only coincidental that it happened when the patch occurred.

You will now have fresh plaster so only bleach or a SWG for chlorination is all you need.

I did miss that. Yes I do use a nature2 cartridge. So the purple water has cleared up and noe there are yellow/brown stains in areas of the pool. This is caused by the copper? Another thing they did different was when they filled the pool up after they patched it they used well water. When we filled it, after they were done the first time, we used our house water and have never had a problem.
 
That is new information that the pool was recently drained and refilled. So the copper would have left with the drain before the patch job.

With well water it is typically iron. The purple color is odd though. Normally iron shows up as light green or brown.

I still suggest you do not use the mineral cartridge. It does not reduce the level of FC you need in the pool and will eventually build up copper levels enough to turn blonde hair green and stain your pool.
 
If the need for this replaster is their fault they should do a full chip out. It is not YOUR fault they are having to do it but YOU will be the one living with the results. Down the road many years YOU will have to pay extra to do a full chip out when the pool needs a new plaster job due to time.

I thought I mentioned that in my purple water post. On Thursday they drained the pool. I have not had any issues with my water until this point. For the 2 months last year we were able to enjoy it, it was always crystal clear and all my levels were good. I didn’t even take water samples to the store because I had everything running good.
A&S wanted to wait until this spring to fix the divot they left. So this Thursday they came out and drained my pool did that horrible patch job, then re filled with well water on Friday. That water was green and we were told it was ok. I added the metal out to the well water ran the pump for 24hrs then back washed, shocked, and added chlorine and muratic acid because the ph was high. It cleared up by Saturday. That’s when we realized the bad patch job they did. Sunday morning we put the vacuum in and left. I hadn’t added any other chemicals other then what I just listed. Within 10 minutes the water turned purple. Sunday went back up to pool store and added 2 more bottles of metal out ran filter for 24 hrs again backwashed then just let the filter run no stop until last night. My husband spoke to the GM at A&S yesterday and that’s when he told us with everything we have been through he decided to just replaster our pool. I cane home last night and the purple is gone I turned off the filter but now we are left with brown stains.
I’m sorry I wasn’t more specific before. I was worried about the purple water then things changed. I was at work dealing with all this. It very overwhelming.
So now I’m concerned with these stains. Will they show threw the new plaster? Should I just tell them to to a full chip out? I want this pool to last. I don’t want to be shoveling out money in 10 years to do another replaster.
I appreciate all the advice you have given me.

One more note. My nature2 cartridge was installed when they opened the pool on 3/27. I didn’t have any problems until the filled the pool back up with the well water.

Yes it is their fault. I wondering if I should insist on a full chip out so we aren’t dealing with this 10 yrs down the road.
