Possible clog in line

Portland, or
We just aquired a inground fiberglass pool with our new house. I believe it is about 40 years old and 20,000 gal.
I've noticed that debris don't seem to be sucked up at the bottom of the pool. I swam down when the pump was running and didn't feel any suction on the bottom drain.
The skimmer and pump and filter are all working fine. I tried using a hose to force water through the line at both ends, and leaves and such came out the same end, but not all the way through. So I think it may just be totally clogged and full of leaves.
Any suggestions on how to clear it out? The hose was only helpful for the first foot or so and then didn't seem to help.

Welcome to the forum!
You should never be able to feel a suction at a main drain. If you can, it is very dangerous for entrapment.
I would not concern myself with it. Main drain is unnecessary in the proper maintenance of a pool. Many pools are being build now without them.
I suggest you read ABC's of Pool Water Chemistry.

PW,

I agree with Marty.. I have two pools and neither has had a working main drain for the past 10 years.. They both work just fine.

If you just can't stand it and want to work on it, the first thing to do is determine if your main drain is plumbed back to your equipment pad or to the bottom of the skimmer.

Once you determine that, you can use a Drain King to force water from the skimmer or the equipment pad, back out the main drain.

Thanks,

Jim R.
