Pool vaccum - how to unhook

this might sound silly but have you turned the pump all the way off so there’s no suction?
there are a couple variations of skimmer basket caps that have vacuum hose attachments. I have a hose like that, I wrapped a ~1/2" thick collar (repeatedly wrapped a roll of electrical tape around the hose) around one section to prevent it from being sucked down the pipe.

There's also this one - it allows your skimmer to work along with the vacuum hose.
Both of these will capture the debris in the basket before going through your plumbing and into your pump basket.....so that's a plus.
