Outdoor bathtub is all I need...maybe slightly bigger (Buckeye, AZ New Build)....

Just found out they are doing the shotcrete later today. I'm going to get home to be there for it. Anything I should look out for while they are doing the work? It is a cooler day today here....will be in the mid 50s when they do the shotcrete. Is that good, bad, indifferent? It will get down to the high 30s tonight and then warm back up to the 60s over the weekend. Should I be worried about the temperature in the 30s? There isn't a freeze warning or anything.

Thanks!

Cooler weather much better than hot weather. Still plan to water the fresh gunite every so often.

Be sure they do not use rebound for any of the final product.

You need to watch to make sure they do not pick any "slop" off the ground and put in on the walls or such. If there is any "slop" they should put it in the "slop" bucket. "slop" is also known as rebound.

Make sure they make any steps or shelves you have in your pool. If you want the edges rounded on steps or benches now is the time to tell them that or if you want them "sharp" this is also the time to ask for it.

Thanks for the help everyone! It is coming along pretty well so far. The foreman/owner told me that when he built pools back east using gunite, anything that fell would have to be thrown out of the pool. He said that shotcrete isn't like that and that it stays the same as long as it is still wet. The did the baja steps and sides first. They are planning to slope the parts of the beam where the boulders will go so they are just above or touching the water.

An old thread on the question- Did your PB's shotcrete sub reuse the shotcrete rebound?

I can find articles on the net saying not to use rebound from shotcrete. Such as:

Use of Rebound in Swimming Pool Construction

The 2006 International Building Code states in section 1913.6:
1913.6 Rebound. Any rebound or accumulated loose aggregate shall be removed from the surfaces to be covered prior to placing the initial or any succeeding layers of shotcrete. Rebound shall not be reused as aggregate.

Thanks for the links Allen. I'm going to talk with the Super about it. They didn't haul anything away and they did the floor last.

So I'm not sure what to do about one other issue. They put in holes for umbrella sleeves in both baja steps even though I didn't ask for that. They mistook the bubblers (already in the steps) for unbrella sleeves on the diagram. I was wondering why they had the holes and asked but they were done shooting already. The subcontractor said that they can just fill them in later. What is better for the integrity of the pool...fill in the holes later or go ahead and have them put in sleeves so there isn't a patch. I'm sure they would do the sleeves for free at this point.

Thanks Rob. I actually had several sleeves put in for umbrellas but I put them all in the beam and not actually in the pool. I know you are right about the shade. I’ll just leave the new ones in. They will probably get used some.

The boulders went in today. They brought in nice shapes and sizes. I'm a little disappointed that they didn't try to put them closer to the water line. I think it will still look good and the super told me he'll make sure the tile guys do a really nice job on the cuts along the boulders. Decking should be at the end of the week.

Thanks! I didn’t get to help...they just brought them. I have some similar ones already in the yard that will be along the edges on the decking. They are coming Friday so I can tell them where to put them.

Jay, have you walked those stairs in the pool? They seem very narrow and may be a problem for getting in/out of the pool, especially for older people.
Maybe see if you could use a handrail or grab pole in that area by the boulder.

The bottom step is 9" and the middle two are slightly less then 12". Would have been better if they were all 10". We were going to put in a sleeve for a handrail but the sales guy said that since we are just doing salted concrete it would be easy to put on in later if we wanted and not very expensive. Now that I've been in and out of the pool a few times I think that boulder next to the stairs is going to get used as a handrail quite a bit. Its in a perfect spot for it.

I met with guy yesterday and we designed the cover for the pool equipment. It will be a mix of gabion posts with corrugated metal that we will let rust out. I also got some 5' gabion posts that will go around the yard. He is going to design a fire pit for me as well. Hopefully it will look great. I have a lot of rocks already but we are going out to look for more today.
