Hi

Were about to get our first pool now our kids are confident in the water.

Weve seen a 6m x 4m below ground pool at a local supplier with an aboveground spa which spills over into the pool. Ive been reading up from this website, Dryden Aqua, and a few other sites to produce a scope of what I think we want and which I can provide to a few of the pool suppliers for a quote. By doing it this way Ill understand the system and the functionality.

Id be really interested in any feedback on equipment setups, piping, setouts, lessons learnt etc which others have done and are happy to share. PS were in Perth Australia.

-Were currently not planning on having a separate gas heater for spa, but then it eliminates spa use during winter so rethinking the idea.
-If we go fibreglass pool, pool suppliers here typically only use surface skimmers and not floor main drains due to access incase of leaks. I guess a main drain could be added in the lower side section of the pool wall or isnt this an issue?
-Are we best going a pump for the pool and laminars and another for the spa? If we end up having a swimjet that on its own system anyway.
-Does the spa require a skimmer given its spillover type?

Welcome to TFP.

  • A spa does not get skimmers. Surface debris flows over the spillover into the pool to be skimmed.
  • Main drains are not needed in any pool.
  • Get at least 2 skimmers in your pool.
  • Outdoor pools do not require a UV system. You get plenty of natural UV In Perth.
  • Consider a cartridge filter instead of a sand filter with glass media
  • You do not need Screenlogic with the IntelliCenter. The Intellicenter has network communications built in standard.
  • Intellibrite lights are failure prone and expensive. Consider getting Microbrite lights.
  • Consider getting the Intellichlor system IC40 instead of the iChlor. The Intellichlor cells seem to be more relaible and higher quality.
  • You can get the IntelliCenter bundled with the IC40 cell and the Power Center is integrated into the IntelliCenter box.

@ajw22 Thanks for feedback and points taken on board. Regarding the recommended change from the sand filter w glass media to a cartridge filter, what’s your reasoning? Is it reliability?
A couple of years ago cart filters were all the range over sand filters over here but the few PB we’ve spoken to this year are spruiking sand filters w glass media.
Dryden Aqua claim their latest media can filter to 1 micron compared to 8 microns for the best cart filters.
Cheers
