New Northeastern Pa Build

not 5 heads 12! Lol. It all was ready to be picked at once from the garden or it would bolt. Which means seed and then it doesn't taste good.

Ok on everything

except:

how long between chlorine and acid?

sock! Say what! I think I missed something when reading. I got to go read now. I thought I toss it in?

edit: I just read. In the skimmer in a sock. Like a white gym sock? Pour it in and tie it and throw it in one of the skimmers? Says it might not dissolve for a day or so and to not backwash. Also level of it might not register for a week? So I just let it dissolve and don't worry about that level testing? I bought Clorox brand.

kim you said in front of return? Not skimmer? So tie off a sock hang it on string in front of return using a rock so it doesn't slide into pool?

My pool was plastered a week ago and I did my own startup, so I'll answer about the CYA for you... Yes, you can put it in a white gym sock, tie it and drop it in a skimmer or hang it in front of a return. Then every time you go out to brush, just squeeze the CYA sock (like a stress ball lol) a bit and that will help make the CYA dissolve faster. You can even split the dose in half and use 2 socks in separate skimmers or hang one and skim another, doesn't matter. My pool is a little smaller and it did take about 2 days for the full dose to dissolve. My CYA level registered when I tested it 2 days later and is the same 3 days later, I'll test it again after the weekend just to make sure it's correct.
Your target CYA is likely 30 as a minimum, you can adjust up from there if needed, best to target a little low as it's easier to add than to remove it.

20-30 minutes between chlorine and acid is good.

What kind of start up are they doing? More here, Pool School - Start-up New Plaster

Raising TA will make it more difficult to lower pH. 5 minutes is plenty of time between adding chlorine and acid, especially if you add one on the opposite side of the pool. Both mix into the water almost instantly.

Maintaining chlorine above minimum for your CYA, [FC/CYA][/FC/CYA], and keeping pH at 7.8 or lower at all times are the two most important things during startup, depending what start up method is used.

Kristin: :goodpost: Great explanation of adding CYA!

I remember when I was first told how to add it, I thought it must be some TFP hazing ritual!! Lol!! It really is strange.

Jim: Kristin is right, go ahead and have 2 long tube socks ready to use - no holes - just in case you have more CYA than fits into one.

I'll text a photo of my CYA 'equipment'. I use a large funnel (mine is a funnel for adding oil to cars). It makes it easier easier for me to pour the CYA granules into the socks.

The clorox brand CYA (aka stabilizer or conditioner) dissolves a little faster than the HtH brand. Both work fine. Either way, you have to squeeze the sock. Just squeeze it for 5-10 minutes each time you go out to do something with the pool.

I didn't read this yet. But wNted to get this out there. Should I backwash first before cya? I have a de filter. My pool builder is coming in pm to show me. Never had a pool so don't know how to yet. So should I wait for cya or can I do it when he comes. I'm going to start everything else in a bit.

Start up was not with acid. The company gave me something to dump in. A gallon of it. They didn't tell me the name. Called the office for plaster company she said it's what they use for startup. So that's all I know. I'm following diamond brite startup with pool builder. I'm going to test in a bit. Just getting ready.

I'm going out now to test. i'll post results. i'm adding acid before i post back while brushing while waiting for you guys to help out.

1. Backwash now? can i do it in PM when builder comes? can i do cya now then or should wait?
2. CYA target? 30 for pool math?

ok results:

ph: 7.2
ta: 90
ch: 100
fc: 0
cya: 0

ph: doing nothing to get to 7.4. keeps raising anyway
ta: adding 2lbs, 15 oz baking soda
fc: 77 oz of bleach 10%
ch: 37 lbs say what???!!! need to get to 300
cya: floating 5 lbs of cya

how that look. going to walmart now for more CH

jim

Oxo measuring cup is fine. Other numbers are fine. I assume you used PoolMath for the calculations after entering all of your test reults. Clorox brand CH is also fine it just costs 10x more than deicer. Lowe's sells 50lbs for under 20 bucks and 25 lbs of CH at Leslie's is around 47 bucks.

ahhh. i didn't know. live and learn. that's why I'm here! :) Thanks!

ok so I guess I'll shoot for CH of 250 cause I don't have enough of it anyway to get to 300 anyway. I'll split it into 2 or 3 doses you think. or can i drop all 28 lbs in one dose? 28 lbs per math. clorox bottle says 1/3's if large dose, but doesn't say what is a large dose.

opinion?

so I just added the 83 oz by volume of CYA to go from 0-30. I had to put it in 3 socks so here is what I did. all my other returns are on steps. SO didn't want them to touch plaster there.

I call this "Making CYA walk the plank!"

they are stable. 5lb hanging over the pool. I have a lot of weight to hold wood still and I used the staples and pull string rope. all 3 are moving in the return water.

that ok?

Jim the no back wash is for people who dump their CYA down the skimmer straight in to the filter like the directions on the bottle says  You know better as you found TFP. You may back wash if you feel you need to do it to help you learn how to do it. Take lots of notes AND we will help you when it is time for you to do it on your own.

LOVE the "cya walking the plank" CUTE and yes it is GREAT!

I use plastic measure cups from the dollar store so you am sure what you found will work fine!

Keep asking questions and learning!

thats kim! why about the CH thing. I have enough to go to 250. Should I dump the whole 28lbs at once or in 2 or 3 shifts?

FC done also now. Doing TA now. Will wait to hear from you guys about CH plan of attack!

I'm old school I'm on paper . I have recorded drop times even. So we know time in-between drops.

You seem to have your size dialed in so I say do a couple of lbs so you can see how it goes. Does it sink and you have to fight to get it mixed in or does it mix in right away? If it is hard to mix in do a little at a time to help you mix it in. If it is easy to mix in then do it all at once.

Kim:kim:

Kim. Sorry I missed ur above post too.

Im going to eat and then go do it. Wife doesn't want kids in till I get it somewhat dialed in. My builder also wants us out of it for a few days still. He is cautious about the plaster I guess.

Im going to let them dunk thier feet I a bit. lol. I'm a horrible father giving them a pool filling it and then saying No swimming in it yet. Lol

I feel your pain on the brushing...I hate doing it especially when I don't see much happening. Everyone says it takes time and there is definitely less plaster dust.
