Increasing Free Chlorine in Covered Pool in absence of CYA

To recap the possibilities:

  1. Algae in the water
  2. Ammonia in the water
  3. Expired or degraded liquid chlorine
  4. Chlorine burned off quickly due to lack of buffer
Your theory about all the chlorine going to your filter and attacking something there doesn't hold up since 10s of gallons per minute are flowing through it.
