EDITED as I found a paper from the original build in 1989!
Please help me figure out how many gallons this amoeba-shaped "sports" pool is!

Length: 35 ft
Width at widest part: 15.5 ft
Shallow on both ends: 3.5 ft
Deep end in the middle: 6 ft

Using online calculations, I *think* it's 12,500 gallons.
Is that right?

I think it is 11,500 to 12,000.

As you add chemicals use PoolMath Effects of Adding and see how your actual results compare with PoolMath. If your actual is consistently higher then PoolMath then decrease the pool volume a bit. If lower then increase the pool volume. Overtime you will get to the correct size.

I wonder if it might be 'better' to do a partial drain before attacking this VERY GREEN neglected pool. What do you think??
in-ground pool, +/- 12,500 gallons

FC: 0.30
CC: 0.30
PH: 8.7
TA: 100
CH: 430
CYA: 5

Should I SLAM or partial drain, then SLAM???

I know I should adjust ph first, but should I also adjust CYA before SLAM?

Where in N. Cali are you? What are your water rates? Might be better to just drain or replace all the water, but I'd weigh the water rates against the chlorine.

Post a pic, we'll give you an assessment.

Yes. Link-->SLAM Process

Either way,
1) Welcome to TFP...
2) we recommend you get a good test kit. Link-->Test Kits Compared

Ok, add 5ppm of liquid chlorine per day until the test kit arrives and nothing else.

Brush.

One recommendation if you don't mind? Get a smart stir. Game changer.

Take my SWCG, Robot or Smart stir...I fill in the pool.

Give you some inpiration...Link-->How Clear is TFP Clear?

Before adding 5ppm should I add a gallon or so of muriatic acid to bring the pH down?

Also, no one will use the pool once it's brought back to life. It's my parent's pool & they aren't ever going to get in it again (their words, lol)
I'm cleaning it up for them so mosquitos & others don't breed in there.

First rule of TFP. Get a good test kit.
Second rule, based on your own testing, know what you are adding and why.

IF, and only IF, you have a Phenol Red pH test kit (those are typically readily available locally), then yes, you can use muriatic acid to lower pH.
HOWEVER...please download pool math and use it to calculate all your additions and for your pH reductions. Link-->PoolMath
AND, only do it in .4 reductions. The chemistry is complex, and you can't calculate pH reductions accurately beyond .4. The phenol red test is not accurate above 8.
So, if you are going to reduce pH, test with your own Phenol red kit, confirm 8 or above. Use pool math to calculate a .4 pH reduction. Add the recommended amount of Muriatic with pump on. Pour slowly, like a 1 gallon in 2 minutes rate, directly over a return, with your pump running, then brush in that area...we don't muriatic to pool. 30 minutes later test again. If necessary, reduce again. Rinse and repeat until your pH is 7.4-7.6.

Also, no one will use the pool once it's brought back to life. It's my parent's pool & they aren't ever going to get in it again (their words, lol)

Pools take daily maintenance and care. That includes testing (daily) and chlorination. If you have no one to do that, it may be time to remove the pool. Pools are like dogs. If you don't feed them, they die. Horrible analogy, sorry, but true.

It would be a dream to have the pool removed!!!! Unfortunately, the cost is outrageous. My folks plan on selling by the end of the year, so I'm on deck to help them keep the pool in good working order until then.
