Cya newbie

first time pool owner and new to the forum.. following my pool store testing (Leslies.) i went ahead and did a partial drain and fill yesterday to lower cya level .. went from 120 to 102 with a 12 inch drain.

Should I do another foot tonight to bring it down under 100 or just leave it as is.. ive seen in other places that cya of 150 is still ok.. its really only a concern when i gets to 200 plus.. thanks.. hope that explains what iam asking..

You'll want the CYA below 60. The higher the CYA, the higher the FC needs to be to sanitize at the same level. Have a read :

Iam wondering why i was given a ppm range for cya from 30-100 i know there's different standards based on pool sanitizer but it's been driving me bonkers why i see such a different range for me

Please forget everything you’ve learned from Leslie’s. Review the links posted by Newdude. Specifically Recommended Pool Levels under Pool Care Basics.

Your tablets are increasing your CYA to unmanageable levels. I would remove them immediately and only chlorinate with liquid chlorine.

I went ahead and drained another 2 feet and letting it refill overnight.. looking at test kits as well.

I drained in hopes to bring cya down to accepted level and make the switch to liquid only.. with that said and cya at normal levels does it change the frequency of when iam supposed to check fc levels ?..say 2-3 a week? Especially since we live in deep south Texas and normal high temps are over 100 daily

The main problem with high CYA besides needing to dump massive amounts of chlorine in to get it above the minimum sanitary level is you won’t be able to accurately measure PH above 10ppm Chlorine. So you testing will never be accurate.

That said you need a Taylor 2006 or TF-100 with FAS DPD chlorine testing. Start by ordering that and we’ll be able to help you with accurate testing.

I started the TFP method 2 months ago after our second green pool with the local maintenance company. It is incredibly easy and honestly, pretty fun. Highly recommended but we can’t guide you with inaccurate pool store testing numbers.

now that I diluted some more cya. how many turn overs should I go for before I test again to begin the re balance process ?

Taken from a quick search of previous advice given to other users ( High CYA - time to wait before retesting after 50% drain ), you should be able to retest after about 30 min to 24 hours. Without accurate water chemistry testing, yourself at home you are making assumptions based on pool store results. There are so many reports here on TFP detailing how inaccurate free pool store testing really is. Now you are making decisions and taking actions that are possibly incorrect. Don't assume your way into wasting many $s, Start with good data from a proper test kit and move forward with a sound plan of action that works every time.

We had a member yesterday or the day before with a poolstore CYA of 87 that we would have had them drain half the pool, had we believed it. We would have said half out of caution if going through the trouble to ensure enough was drained.

Taylor came back at 60, which while higher for liquid chlorine, is manageable to ride it out.

It's almost daily that we see another botched CYA test from the pool stores. It's entirely plausible that yours could be fine now too, but we just don't know yet.

I won't receive my Taylor 2006 kit till Wednesday earliest..is that too long to wait with water what I assume is way out of balance since I have 3 feet of drain and filled

Its going to have to be ok. It is what it is.

Add 5ppm FC daily to keep it from becoming a swamp. PH, TA and CH aren't short term concerns.

Typically we recommend adding 5 ppm of chlorine daily until your kit arrives. For your pool that would be about half a gallon of 10% liquid chlorine. I recommend the Pool Essentials Chlorinating Liquid from Walmart, but Lowes, Home Depot, and most hardware stores will have liquid chlorine as well.
