It's your call. Sooner is always better. If you wait, ensure you are no less than target range for the day.

We then there you go !!! She can start and you can relieve her later.

slight update... had wife add the recommended amounts of Muriatic acid and chlorine this morning.. but unfortunately was not able to get a fc level during the day.. just got home and tested to 11.8 fc..

Added the 5 drops of 0003 and no change from clear.. I literately could not see any sign of green of any kind.. everything looks brand new as i remember it day one.. I brushed following instructions..

what's my game plan from here?

There are 3 exit criteria. CC 0.5 or under, check. Pool is clear and nothing comes up when brushing or anything, check.

Last one is a passing Overnight Loss Test and your done. If evening test lines up with morning test with 1ppm or less FC loss you’re done.

Once you confirm that FC can drop until you hit recommended and it’s just a matter of dialing in any other levels as needed and maintaining.

Actually I missed the 11.8 FC test part. I’d bump it up to SLAM level personallly before the OCLT test. Some of that could have been UV loss, but UV could have brought CC down a bit too.

So I’d do the following:
  1. Evening test for FC level
  2. Dose to 24ppm with pump running and test again 10-20 mins later.
  3. Test again in the AM, cross fingers that you see 1ppm loss or less.

+1. Clear water with no traces of algae whatsoever means you start OCLTs. There's no need to try before then.

Updated test shows a drop of FC to 8 ppm from 11 ppm yesterday at 5pm to 8:30 pm today

Using my new full face I was able to do a long and detailed inspection on all the floor and walls.. no algae to report

Nice I need one of those, I put my kids shark one on when I want to inspect haha.

The OCLT is designed to take the sun out of the equation. Either sun or something organic burns FC. Testing after sunset and before sunrise narrows it down to organics. Sun is still in your equation.

Algae is a symptom, much like a cough. The bacteria and other things that grow when algae can are cancer or the bigger concern. Just because you took a cough drop and the algae is gone doesn’t mean the cancer, or in this case bacteria and human-to-human organics, are gone.

Clear water and minimal CCs are two of the three tests, you need an OCLT to finish.

I'll be testing in the morning before I take off to work (4am)

Good call! Fingers crossed you see 7ppm or higher. Hopefully the last time you have to do a 4am test, but it probably won’t be haha.

May seem extreme at times, but in general I think most people here don’t cut corners. Otherwise we’d be recommending a bag of shock and a bottle of Algecide and you’d be dealing with the same thing in a few months.

But it feels good knowing that anyone that gets in my pool, my kids or guests, are swimming in completely sanitary and hygienic water free of any chemical or organics irritation. And it’s all because of me.

I’m a little jealous your wife gets credit too!

Yea she gets props and will hopefully enjoy being a part of the pool care. Mine has come a long way from questioning if I knew what I was doing and asking why we don’t just hire another pool guy, to now bragging to our friends and family that I’m our “pool boy”. She’d never open up the test kit though, and forget about poring any chemicals in there.

And hopefully 4am starts lead to early afternoons back to enjoy the pool. And if not whatever time you do get to spend in there will now be so much better because it’s your baby now!

Great to hear! You’ve made a lot of progress in weeks time.

Things will be much easier from here on out. Stay on top of daily testing, Pool Math makes life really easy. If you have any other levels that are off post up the next full set of test results and we can comment on anything else that’s off.

I’d read up on all the Pool School articles too until you understand all them fully. You’ve pick up all the basics as part of this and your really not far from being an expert on everything look related.

Enjoy your Trouble Free Pool, perfect timing with the weather heating up!

When you run out of pool school, scroll to the bottom of the page and click the TFP Wiki. The rest of the iceberg is there. 😁
