My CYA per the pool store testing is 140ppm and has been going up steadily all summer (very hot in TX!). We are still using tabs and are going to switch to liquid chlorine once we can get this CYA down. The pool store told me easiet was his to put a hose I. Deep end of pool and let it overflow. Or we can rent a pump I’d like to try the hose option first and wanted any advice on that

We have a small algae problem that clears up once we brush and vacuum. It’s perfectly clear today after a DE filter backwash and good brushing yesterday. Pics attached are right after we brushed.

You really need your own kit to determine the actual CYA level. I'd get one now...Link-->Test Kits Compared

Add 5ppm of liquid chlorine a day until your kit arrives. Nothing else.

When you kit arrives, do the diluted CYA test, #8 here and report results. We'll help you determine how much to replace.

To replace water, Follow the "no drain water exchange" here: If you have an overflow, and the no drain indicates fill to the deep end, then you can just fill water to the deep end and allow the water to go to overflow.

Thank you! We did have a small taylor kit that basically measured PH and chlorine but i just ordered the TT100 test kit.. my chlorine is already high at 10ppm so do i really need to add more chlorine?

also to add 5ppm of chlorine, how much is that, sorry to sound dumb but we have about a 12k gal pool, I also would need to buy the liquid chlorine so will do some further research on where to purchase

Welcome to TFP!

It’s perfectly clear today
Stick with us, because if the pictures you posted represent the best you've gotten with the pool store then we can show you a whole new world! You're on the right track with the test kit on its way.

Yes. Let me introduce you with one of the most important differences between TFP and everyone else: maintaining proper FC/CYA Levels. 10 ppm FC is actually incredibly LOW if your CYA level is accurate.

Just got my Taylor kit 2005 and waiting on the fac /dpd kit to accurately measure my chlorine levels

I tested all yesterday and need to lower CYA. Read thru the draining / exchange of water and we do have auto drain feature. Our pool never overflows even during Harvey with a crazy amt of rain (2017). So I want to make this easy and put my hose in the deep end, run it overnight and the. Test my cya tomorrow morning.

Has anyone tried this method. My pool water is 86 about 18 inches down and hose temp showed as 84. Can’t measure TDS in my tap water not pool store shows 700ppm a low value in their chart.

Your Delta T is likely around -1 or so. (Drain from the bottom, fill from the top).

You might get some mixing, but it is worth a shot, if your water rates are reasonably cheap.

Run your hose for 5 minutes, then test the water temperature.

I know this is a stupid question but we did not install the pool. We bought house with the pool so really don’t know how the drains work? All I know is in extreme rain the pool never overflows. I can test this is guess to see where the water overflows. I would guess it goes out the skimmers maybe. We do have an overflow drain pipe that when we backwash the water goes there and then into the street thru a drain pipe

Assuming you got your 140 CYA level from the test in your k-2005 kit, did you get that from extrapolating how far below the 100 line you were or from doing the diluted test where you take half tap water and half pool water, mix them and then perform the CYA test with them and doubling the result?

Well I did the test but it only goes to 100 on the cylinder and so my sample covered the black dot ⚫️ about halfway below the 100 reading so it seems the test kit cannot measure above 100. I did see another method using half pool water and half tap water then multiply by 2. I will give that a try to see if I can get more accurate

Whoa 😳. I just redid using the half pool water method and per that it shows my CYA at 180!!! So definitely gotta drain a lot of water. I’m gonna try doing the hose siphon as don’t really want to rent or buy a pump. Although living in Houston, only downhill slope is my driveway which is not much. May not be able to get it flowing. We shall see. Thanks for the feedback

If it was 90 diluted, dilute again:

If you need to dilute the pool water further then apply these ratios:

Pool waterTap or distilled waterMultiply result by
112
123
145

After the 2 parts tap / 1 part pool mix, it's irrelevant if its higher as you already need to drain 90% of the water at that point. Would 94% really matter ? 🤣

But yeah. Retest because the 2nd 90 result may be just as off as the first 100. Or it is actually near 180 and we get confirmation.

So draining 90% of the water?!? I was thinking third to a half. And then trying to just take some more out each week from vacuuming and waste down to the skimmer / rely on more dilution from rain that’s coming as well as switching to liquid chlorine
