Can't keep my pool clean this summer!

Mustard slam is 42 for 70 CYA. You're not outrageously over that. It'll burn off quick in the sun tomorrow.

I'm sure many folks being poolstored have done worse.

Might want to hit up Leslie's in the AM if it hasn't come down enough to regular slam for the party. Here's the chemicals needed and the dosages. Click on Chem geek's name below to be brought to the thread for the full discussion.

The dosage for sodium metabisulfite is around 1.5 ounces (weight) per 10,000 gallons for a 1 ppm FC reduction. For sodium sulfite (another alternative) it's 2.4 ounces and as I mentioned above, for sodium thiosulfate it's 2.6 ounces

Thanks for this. I'll retest in the morning. Wondering if I don't have a real estimate of my pool size.

What's mustard slam? Should I stay out of the water tomorrow?

I must have made a miscalculation, as I just measured FC close to 50ppm. Am I in trouble?

Let's start with testing procedure. It may be that you are using 25mL of water, but counting as .5FC.

Use 10mL of pool water. Add the heaping scoop of R-0870. Should turn red. Hold the R-0871 vertical and SLOOOOWLY drop drops. Let them fall under their own weight. Each drop is .5FC, so 10 drops would be 5FC. Take the total drops and divide by 2.

Measuring 50FC would be 100 drops. I'm almost sure that you used a 25mL sample. Re-try the test with instructions above.

Long story. For Mustard alage we raise the FC to 60% of the CYA for 24 hours instead of the normal 40% of regular slam.

MA slam is safe for the pool for 24 hours, and you're reasonably close to that if your testing was correct. You'll likely do no harm with your mistake.

Regular SLAM is safe for swimming when you can see well enough to rescue someone, but the sun probably won't lower the FC that far before the party. So get some FC reducer from Leslie's to have on hand and you can adjust it the rest if the way at party time.

Did a retest earlier this morning - bad news is my initial testing was accurate at FC close to 50 ppm. Good news is FC dropped to approx 38 ppm (so definitely some overnight loss). Will retest again shortly.

For testing FC while it is coming down, use 5mL and each drop is 1FC. When back in range, switch back to 10mL sample, each drop is .5 FC

Just did another test after using the pool on Saturday and not touching it since. I'm at FC - 11 ppm.

So, since Friday's big shock event, I went from 50 to 38 to 11. A lot of FC loss in 3 days.

FC burns off as a % so it does so faster at higher levels. It's not really noticeable near target range, but becomes real noticeable in the 20s. I just saw it myself doing a preventative slam where I was losing 7 ppm a day in the low 20s VS 3 or 4 ppm a day in the 5 to 10 FC range. I had no overnight loss so nothing else was consuming the extra FC but the daily UV.

It makes SWG slams harder and more expensive but for salt pools, it's a necessary evil for the FC protection it provides during normal operation.

My SWG is yelling at me to add a LOT of salt; I'm guessing I'm to hold off until after I finish this SLAM? I haven't put anything in the pool since Saturday's usage.

Should I sort of start over?

I couldn't really figure out how to turn off the SWG, but I think it's disabled itself due to low chlorine.

Just tested, FC is down to 5 (from 11) in 2 days.

Going to attempt SLAM starting today or tomorrow. Just measured CYA at approx 70. Should I backwash the filter prior? Any other caveats before I give it a go?

Pool is such a headache this season - green every 3rd day.

Just dumped in my first batch of liquid chlorine for SLAM!

Anyone clued in to how long it takes to circulate? Would like to take an 'immediate' FC reading to verify I have my pool size correct.

OK - something isn't adding up.

As per SLAM guidelines, added 2 gallons of liquid chlorine (12.5%) with my CYA ~ 60, to get to a SLAM level of 24.

Just tested my FC and got a reading of 43. Tested twice.

Running the PoolMath in reverse, it would suggest my pool is approximately 6,000 gallons. The installer had set the SWG to 15,000 gallons, but I had thought it to be closer to 11,000. Can this make sense? Or is something else not right...

What was the sample size and drop count ?

10ml and 86 drops ?

What are the basic dimensions of the pool and depths ? Got a pic ?
