Buying a vinyl IG pool in winter; pump submerged?

Hi!

I am planning on putting an offer on a new home with a vinyl-lined IG pool (in the winter/NY), and during a visit I noticed a submersible pump beneath the liner with a pump outlet running to the lawn. I've had my own pool for a few years, and the only time I had to do this was when I had a liner failure and needed to keep the level low enough so that water didnt spill behind the liner and freeze.

Does anyone know why the owner would do this?

Behind the liner or under the winter cover?
There is a big difference.

The pump was under the cover, I couldn't see where it was. When I had liner issues I had the pump laying on the top step to ensure the water level didnt go above it.

Then just a lazy superstition, Don’t worry about it.

On bright side if he has a discharge pump rigged up, Liner must be holding water.

I'd say listen to your gut. Can you ask them what it's there for? Especially if it can affect the offer at all.

I think I would take it as a good thing until you find out different. Probably just pre-planning for any runoff or snow melt that gets under the cover. Having the pump in the pool already makes it easy to keep the level down. Probably need to keep it below the skimmer throat or the returns.
