    Jandy or Pentair Automation?

I had local Pool Company rep come over and give my prices on refinishing pool, and adding automation among other things. I asked for Pentair but they seem to prefer Jandy. He added a line number for "Install Jandy RS-PS8 automation pack, 3 JVA valves, Conduit run for new spa light, and remove...

    Need Automation Advice

The solar panel are on the roof right next the pool equipment. Just a few feet up to the roof at the bottom, and maybe 10 more feet to the top of the solar panels. Is this an air sensor measuring the roof/panel temperature?

I'm willing to spend a few thousand for system to automate things. I would expect to pay for temperature sensors, and three motors for the three jandy valves. Appreciate options and your thoughts.

    Concrete decking surface options?

I second the thoughts on NOT using exposed aggregate. Fiancee's pool deck has small pebbles, and my feet and hands get burned by walking or touching the edge. My backyard has a salt finish that I like. Just sprinkled salt on the wet concrete, and washed it off after the concrete dried...

    Cellulose Fiber Clear conversion

I've been a fan of Purifiber, and also buy it direct. One thing to consider is when comparing DE to fiber, that you use less than half (by weight) of the fiber. For instance common practice is to use one pound of DE for every 10 sq. ft. of filter area. Purifiber says to use 6 oz (.375 lb)...

    recommend good automation controls

If the automatic controls won't talk to your Pentair equipment, I would have the pool builder put in something that does work together. Do it now, since it's the first day. I don't see why he would put in Hayward controller. Remind him you questioned this, and just be nice, but firm.

    Need Your Automation Suggestions

Jim, There are no check valves on the specific return lines going to the pool and spa, coming out of the heater. There is a check valve (I think that's what it is it has a clear plastic lid with flow arrow) between the pump and the filter.

I will check for the check valves. I know there are some check valves. This one in question should be on the suction line to the spa. Thinking about how they are, and how they should work so there is no leakage. Thanks so much Jim! So much knowledge.

I may have to replace one of the valves, when she turns the pool on, and the spa off, the spa still drains slowly. (I think the Suction valve is not sealing well, when off on the spa.) Her solution right now is to turn the Return valve just slightly to the spa, so it "leaks" return water to...

Thanks so much Jim R! Just your short reply gave a good idea of what's ahead for me. Quick Question. The Suction, Return, and Solar are currently operated with three Jandy 3-port manual valves. (with inlet, and two possible outlets.) Are these three way valves totally replaced, or is there...

Ok, I don't have a very good picture of how the Easy Touch 8 will make things work. 1. Do I need to use a Easy touch relay for every valve I want to operate? So say I want to switch from Pool to Spa, or vice versa. Two (three way?) valves involved, one for suction, one for return. And relay...

Jim R. Thanks for your thoughtful suggestions, and the link. Is there a problem with warranty if I install the equipment myself? I'm not really impressed with her current pool guy. The filter gauge was not working. So I replaced it, and it read 20 psi, or a bit over. I had her ask pool guy...

After living in my current home for 40 years, I'm moving to live with my fiancee'. Current home of 40 years has a Intelliflo VF pump, and I just love it. There is just a swimming pool where I currently live, no other features such at solar or spa. My son is buying my current home. New home...

Feedback/ recommendations on solar cover and reel.

I have an older solar reel, which I've had for years, and don't know the name. I just purchased a solar cover (12 mil) also, from SolarCovers/LeisureLiving and had good experience with them when there was a problem. The cover is a darker blue than the previous covers I had in the past, which...

    Is there a "better" thermometer

How weird is this? I just called Acu-Rite, and told them my wireless pool thermometer was reading about nine degrees too low. First question she asked was what brand of batteries I was using (I had Walgreen's alkaline). She said they had problems with non-name-brand batteries, and a brand...

    Is there a "better" thermometer

I bought one of the Home Depot wireless thermometers today. It works fine.....except, and this is a big except.....it reads about NINE degrees too low all the time. Going to call Acu-Rite tomorrow, it may be going back to Home Depot.

Steve, Cut the pump flow in half, and the energy usage is cut a lot more than half. Here are a couple of numbers, both taken from my Intelliflo VF: 24 GPM, 268 watts -- 48 GPM, 980 watts. So, half the flow, but barely 1/4 the energy usage. And this comparison is on my VF pump, comparing...

Steve, First of all, lower the speed of a pump, say by half. You are right, of course, that the pump will have less electric demand. But that's not the point. If you lower the speed of a pump by half, you need to pump twice the number of hours to get the same daily flow. So, if the energy...

Steve, The new variable speed pumps are more efficient. If you could compare usage with just your old pump running before, and usage with just your new pump, I would think you would see substantial less energy used on the new pump. But it may be hard to see on your total bill, since you have...

Steve, I would be surprised if you are NOT getting energy savings of at least 50% off your old pump's usage. I posted some numbers, and my pump was 1 hp, smaller than your 1.5 hp, and I'm getting well over that savings. Also, I believe the California Public Utilities Commission has studied...

Also, I wonder if you are getting the flows needed to turn over the amount of water you need. I have the Intelliflo VF, and at 1200 rpm, it is flowing less than 15 GPM on my pool. I don't even get at 15 GPM reading until about 1250 rpm. You mentioned you were running the pump 6-9 hours. If I...

I would think that you would get a reduction in energy usage. But, if you have a large enough solar system that you have 90% of your electric bill paid by your solar system, one would not think that that buying an energy efficient pool pump would have much dollar impact on your bill. The...

I've been advised to replace the water

I've been advised to replace the water

Let me summarize my take on some of the answers. 1. Get a good test kit, to keep good track of chlorine levels, as well as ph, CYA, etc. I've had my water tested at pool stores, and have received consistent results with that at home. 2. Depending on your tested CYA levels, you may not have...
